Musketeers finish 1-2 in series with Chanticleers
CONWAY, S.C. - Xavier baseball had to wait out the rain on Saturday, but the Musketeers were able to get in a pair of games in to close out their stint in South Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Game One didn't go Xavier's way, as despite a hot start the Chanticleers fought their way back to tie up the series. In game two, the Chanticleers took the early lead, with the Musketeers climbing back within one before CCU took the 8-4 win to take two of three with the Musketeers.
The afternoon began with a quick three-run first inning as Grant Stephenson capitalized on an early bases loaded situation with a two-RBI single through the right side. With runners on the corners, Stephenson took off for second and Andrew Walker snuck in to home behind the play and put Xavier up 3-0. Unfortunately the Coastal starter, Reid VanScoter found his footing and held Xavier scoreless until the Sixth.
The Chanticleers got one back in the bottom half and took the lead with a three-run third. They won the all-important five run race, which has decided all of Xavier's games so far this year, by scoring in the fourth as well. Xavier got one back in the sixth to cut the lead in half as Andrew Walker singled home Housinger, but a Coastal homer in the bottom half put the game out of reach.
In game two, Coastal took a two-run lead into the third where a Matthew DePrey homer cut the lead in half. CCU responded with a three-run bottom of the inning for the 5-1 lead. Xavier put up three runs in in the seventh to pull within one, but the Chanticleers posted three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take the 8-4 win.
The Musketeers are back in Ohio on Wednesday as they face Wright State on their way to Indiana for a four-game set in Bloomington.
