Franzoni homers in fourth-straight game
Xavier struck first with a three-run homer with nobody out in the top of the first by slugger Luke Franzoni. He has now gone deep in four-straight games, including a two-homer day on Friday. USC Upstate got one back in the bottom half, but Xavier answered in the 3rd with a bases-loaded sac fly by Andrew Walker to stretch the lead back to 4-1.
The Spartans got another run to stay close in the bottom half of the third, and they tacked on two more in the fourth to tie things up. The score stayed at 4-4 until the top of the seventh when Jack Housinger notched his third hit of the day, a two-RBI double to put Xavier out front again, 6-4. However, USC Upstate wasn't going to lie down, as they immediately answered with three runs after the seventh inning stretch.
Down by one with two runners on and one out, skipper Billy O'Connor called Grant Stephenson's number to pinch hit, and he delivered a two-RBI single to retake the lead. This time, it stuck. Alex Helmin tacked on an insurance run in the ninth, as Lane Flamm converted the five-out save and Xavier clinched the 9-7 victory.
The Musketeers return to the Harley Park at 1:00 p.m. for the series finale tomorrow.

XU AT THE PLATE |
- Jack Housinger got on base five times in today's contest. He hit a crucial RBI double to give Xavier the lead in the seventh, along with a single, reaching on a sac bunt, and two walks. He scored two of Xavier's runs, and both were needed in the 9-7 win.

- Leadoff hitter Jerry Huntzinger went 2-5, scoring three times in today's win.
- Grant Stephenson was the hero late, as he pinch hit and came up with a big two-RBI single to give Xavier the 8-7 lead, and the Musketeers hung out to win.
- Alex Helmin pinch ran for Tyler Demartino (Who went 1-1 as a pinch hitter himself) and later came away with the games final RBI, a sac fly in the top of the ninth to give Xavier some breathing room.
- In addition to recording the save, Flamm also had a hit and scored a run at the plate.

XU ON THE MOUND |
- Bryce Barnett drew the start in today's contest, and did well to keep the Spartan offense quiet. He went three innings while working with the lead, and only gave up two runs.
- Bobby Jones started the fourth and gave up two runs but Luke Bell picked up his teammate and went three full innings without an earned run on his ledger. He struck out two more batters to add to his impressive start to the season out of the pen.
- Jack Lynch had a hand in the seventh, facing two batters, allowing one hit and striking out the other. Jonathan Kelly got the next two outs via a fly out, and yielded the game to Lane Flamm.
- Flamm got the final five outs without allowing a hit to clinch the Xavier victory and earn his first save of the year.
