Baseball Crushes BIG EAST Tournament Records in 27-8 Win Over Creighton

The Musketeers advance to the BIG EAST Championship series with UConn, set to start at noon on Sunday
Xavier took the lead early, going up 1-0 on Jack Housinger's third home run of the day, then adding a second run after Tyler DeMartino tripled and Andrew Walker drove him in with an RBI single.Â
Creighton picked up a run in the bottom of the first and the 2-1 lead held into the third inning, where the Musketeers posted eight runs on eight hits. Three of those were home runs, with two coming from Luke Franzoni including a grand slam to make it a 10-1 lead going into the bottom of the inning.
Xavier added three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to build the lead out to 18-2. Xavier added five more in the sixth inning on two hits, a walk and a pair of hit by pitches. The Musketeer posted another five-run inning int he seventh, fueled by another grand slam for Luke Franzoni, a hit that smashed BIG EAST Tournament records and gave Xavier an over 20 run advantage going into the final innings.
Home runs from Jared Cushing and Eddie Rivero pushed Xavier's offensive output to 27 runs, the most runs Xavier has scored in a single game since joining the BIG EAST. Creighton added five runs in the final two innings to set the final score at 27-8.
Xavier advances to the BIG EAST Championship series against No. 1 UConn, with game one of the series set to begin at noon at Prasco Park, and an if-necessary game two to follow should Xavier win game one in the double elimination format. Tomorrow's games will be broadcast on FS2.

- Luke Franzoni went 3-4 at the plate, hitting a single season record tying three home runs, including two grand slams. Franzoni drove in 11 RBI, matching a school record set by Ty Brenning against Fordham in 2000. His 11-RBI outing brought his season total to 76 RBI, an new single season record for the Musketeers.Â
- Franzoni's three home runs are the most by a player in a BIG EAST Tournament game and his 11 RBI topped the previous BIG EAST Tournament record by four. He now has 14 RBI for the tournament, also a new BIG EAST record.
- After hitting two home runs in the first game of the day, Jack Housinger's first inning home run brought his season total to 16, tied for second most in a single season in Xavier's record, behind only Luke Franzoni's 28Â this season.Â
- Andrew Walker went 5-6, tying a new tournament record for hits in a game. He matched his season-high in RBI with four.
- Grant Stephenson went 2-3 with two runs scored.
- Garrett Schultz went 4-6 at the plate, driving in three RBI.
- Jared Cushing collected three hits (3-5), including a home run, finishing with three runs scored and an RBI.
- Eddie Rivero went 1-1 with a home run, driving in three RBI.
- Alex Helmin, Jerry Huntzinger and Lane Flamm also had hits as the Musketeers finished with a season-high matching 25.
- Xavier's 24 runs set a new BIG EAST Tournament record for a single game. Their
- Xavier's eight home runs in tonight's set a new record for most home runs in a BIG EAST Tournament game. The Musketeers' 13 so far in the tournament is also a new tournament record.

- Lane Flamm went a season-long 5.0 innings in the start, allowing just three runs on seven hits and four walks, striking out four on the way to picking up the win.
- Luke Hoskins entered with two on and no one out in the sixth, going 2.1 innings. He allowed just one earned run on one hit and three walks, striking out a pair.
- George Eisenhardt entered for the final two outs of the eighth, going the final 1.2 innings, allowing four runs, just one earned, on one hit with five walks, striking out three.
