Musketeers fall 4-0 to Vanderbilt in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Xavier women's tennis wrapped up the 2021-22 season on Saturday, falling 4-0 to the No. 30 Vanderbilt Commodores in the NCAA Championships First Round at Ohio State.

The Musketeers wrap up the season at 14-10 overall, brought home the program's third BIG EAST Championship and earned Xavier's third bid to the NCAA Championships.

THE MATCH

In doubles play, the first decision came on the No. 1 court, with Ahmeir Kyle and Emily Thomas falling 6-2 to the No. 37 ranked pair of Anna Ross and Holly Staff. Kat Lyman and Anna Smith took the opening set and jumped out to a 3-1 lead on court No. 3 on the way to taking a 6-3 over Mary Ann Rompf and Dasha Kourkina. Vanderbilt picked up the point with a 6-3 win over Anna Roggenburk and Imani Graham on the No. 2 court for Anessa Lee and Marcella Cruz.

On the No. 5 court, Anna Smith battled back from a 3-1 deficit against Dasha Kourkina to tie it 3-3 before Kourkina took a 6-3 win in set one. A 6-0 win in set to for Kourkina made it a 2-0 Vanderbilt lead.

In No. 6 singles, Blessing Nwaozuzu faced Amy Stevens, falling 6-2 in the first set. Nwaozuzu took a 4-3 lead in the second set before Stevens came back to take the 7-5 win to make it a 3-0 Vanderbilt lead.

In No. 3 singles, Kat Lyman faced No. 87 Anessa Lee, taking three straight games after trailing 5-3 to take a 6-5 lead in the first set before Lee forced the set to tiebreakers, taking the 7-6 (3) win. In the second set, Lee took a 6-3 win to clinch the match for Vanderbilt, 4-0.

On the No. 1 court, Ahmeir Kyle faced No. 46 Anna Ross forcing tiebreakers in the first set before falling 7-6 (4). In the second set, Kyle took a 4-2 lead on the way to a 6-4 win to force a third set. Kyle trailed 2-1 in the third when the match was decided.

In No. 2 singles, Imani Graham faced off with No. 88 Holly Staff, falling 6-3 in set one, before taking a 6-1 win in set two to force a third. Graham and Staff were tied 3-3 when the match was decided.

Anna Roggenburk took control early in set one on the No. 4 court against Marcella Cruz, taking a 4-1 lead on the way to a 6-2 win. In the second set, Cruz took a 6-0 win to force a third where Roggenburk led 5-4 when the match was decided.
