Baseball Uses 11-2 Win in Series Finale to Pick Up Season Sweep of Butler
05.08.22 | Baseball
INDIANAPOLISÂ - An 18-hit day at the plate combined with a career-long outing on the mound from starter Jared Gadd fueled an 11-2 win in game three with Butler, giving the Musketeers the three-game sweep of the Bulldogs. Xavier is 25-23 overall and moved to 9-6 in conference play on the season, after its third BIG EAST series win of the season.
Xavier took the lead in the second inning after Tyler DeMartino led off the inning with a double and Jeff Holtz drove him in with a single to center field. Grant Stephenson followed that with a triple to bring in Holtz to set the score at 2-0.
The Musketeer made it a 3-0 lead with a solo home run for Luke Franzoni in the third inning, his 20th of the season. Xavier pushed it to 5-0 lead in the fifth, with singles from Jared Cushing and Jerry Huntzinger to lead off the inning. With Cushing on third, a failed pick-off attempt at first sent Hunztinger to second and brought Cushing home. Jack Housinger singled up the middle to send Huntzinger home to make it a 5-0 Xavier lead.
A Butler home run in the bottom of the frame cut the lead back to 5-1, the only run allowed by Jared Gadd in the start. Gadd went a career-long 5.0 innings allowing just four hits for the Bulldogs, picking up his fifth win of the season.
Xavier got the run back in the sixth, when back-to-back singles from Cushing and Huntzinger again put two on for Jack Housinger. After a double steal, Cushing came home on a sac fly from Housinger brought in the run to make it 6-1.
BU added another run in the sixth, but the Musketeers responded immediately again, with back-to-back doubles from Tyler DeMartino and Garrett Schultz to lead off the seventh to make it 9-1. A Jack Housinger home run made it a 10-2 lead in the eighth, and the Musketeers manufactured another run in the inning to set the score at 11-2.
Xavier is back in action on Tuesday, May 10, when the Musketeers take on Michigan in Ann Arbor. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
