The game is one of two fall exhibitions for the Cincinnati Rollergirls
CINCINNATI - Roller derby is back in Cincinnati.
After a 2 ½-year hiatus due to covid, the Cincinnati Rollergirls roller derby team is returning to action with two games this fall: Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Cintas Center at Xavier University and Saturday, Oct. 8 at Sports Plus in Evendale.
CRG normally plays in the spring, but the team wanted to return to public play as soon as possible with two preseason games this fall — including on one available date at Cintas Center — before resuming sanctioned play in 2023. CRG was scheduled to play a four-game home season at Cintas Center in 2020 before the covid pandemic hit.
"We're thrilled to play our first public game since 2019 at Cintas Center," said Lauren Bishop, the team's principal owner. "The arena will provide our skaters, fans and sponsors with the best experience yet for roller derby in Cincinnati, and we thank the staff for working with us to make this dream a reality."
The state-of-the-art, 10,224-seat Cintas Center represents a significant upgrade for Cincinnati's amateur roller derby team. CRG played at Xavier's Schmidt Memorial Fieldhouse from 2017 through 2019 and the historic Cincinnati Gardens from 2007 through 2016, when the historic arena was sold and later demolished. The team drew up to 2,000 fans per game in its last season at the Gardens.
At Cintas Center, the Cincinnati Rollergirls will play on the polished concrete floor underneath the removable basketball court, much like the surface of the Cincinnati Gardens. Polished concrete is the preferred surface for the hard-hitting, fast-moving sport of flat track roller derby.
The Cintas Center game is also part of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association's "Back on Track" event series, a global celebration of the re-emergence of the sport that will showcase a variety of roller derby events from around the world. For more information on the series, click here.
Sports Plus in Evendale will accommodate a smaller number of fans than Cintas Center, but CRG is planning to livestream both games for fans who are unable to attend in person.
Information on tickets, opponents and other details will be announced soon.
