Fernanda Ovalle led the Musketeers with nine points and seven rebounds
MILWAUKEE - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 64-40 BIG EAST road game at Marquette on Wednesday night. The Musketeers dropped to 7-13 (0-11 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles improved to 13-7 (6-5 BIG EAST).
The first half was back-and-forth before the Golden Eagles closed the stanza on an 11-2 run, taking a 10-point lead into the locker room (28-18). Marquette outscored Xavier, 36-22, in the second half to pull away for their 13th straight victory in the series history.
• Fernanda Ovalle led the Musketeers with nine points on 4-for-10 shooting. The freshman guard also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out two assists.
• Nila Blackford finished with six points on 3-for-7 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. She added one steal and one block.
• Mackayla Scarlett posted seven points, while Aanaya Harris recorded six points. Harris also pulled down five rebounds and had two steals.
• Xavier finished the game with a .340 field-goal percentage (17-for-50) and went 1-for-10 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 5-for-6 from the foul line.
• Marquette forced 21 Xavier turnovers, converting the miscues into 22 points. The Golden Eagles also held an 11-8 advantage in fastbreak points. Xavier scored four more points in the paint (26-22) than Marquette.
• Xavier had nine steals in the game, the team's ninth game of the year with nine or more steals.
• The Musketeers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 vs Providence. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. from Cintas Center.
