Aanaya Harris led Xavier with 10 points on Saturday afternoon
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 50-48 BIG EAST game vs Providence on Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center. The Musketeers fell to 7-14 (0-12 BIG EAST), while the Friars improved to 13-10 (4-8 BIG EAST).
The game featured eight lead changes and four ties. Xavier took a one-point lead (40-39) into the final quarter, but the Friars outscored the Musketeers, 11-8, in the final frame to escape Cintas Center with the two-point victory.
Tied at 48-48, Providence's Grace Efosa hit a pull-up jumper with four seconds left in regulation to put the Friars up by two points. Xavier used its final timeout to advance the ball on the ensuing possession, but Shelby Calhoun's shot on the final play of the game fell short of tying the contest.
• Aanaya Harris led Xavier with 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting, her 20th career game in double figures. She added five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
• Nila Blackford and Kaysia Woods each added eight points. Blackford chipped in a team-high seven rebounds, while Woods pulled down five rebounds.
• Fernanda Ovalle, Courtney Prenger and Taylor Smith all added five points. The three players combined for 12 rebounds, three assists and one steal.
• Xavier had six blocks in the game, the team's sixth game of the year with six or more blocks. Courtney Prenger posted a game-high four blocks, matching her career high in the stat category.
• Providence won the battle on the glass, 40-36, and scored seven more points off of turnovers (14-12). Xavier scored 20 more points in the paint (28-8) and held a 17-13 advantage in bench points.
• The Musketeers finished the game with a .365 field-goal percentage (19-for-52) and went 4-for-11 from behind the arc. Xavier was also 6-for-12 from the foul line.
• The Musketeers return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 31 vs Georgetown. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
