Men's Tennis 2023 Schedule Announced

CINCINNATI – Xavier men's tennis announced the schedule for Spring 2023, set to kick off on January 15. The Musketeers will face 18 opponents leading up to the 2023 BIG EAST Championship, running from April 20-23 in Cayce, S.C.

Last season, Xavier finished at 12-9 overall, the most wins since the 2015-16 season, including an 8-0 record at home. The 2021-22 Musketeers earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament, the program's highest seed in the BIG EAST Championship since joining the conference in 2013-14, and advanced to the BIG EAST Semifinals for the first time since 2016.

Among the returners is All-BIG EAST Second Team selection Ryan Cahill, as well as Marco Pennelli, Charlie Temming, Cambell Nakayama, Pascal Mosberger, Shashank Reddy, Nick Loudermilk, Aaron Thompson and Jake Zipoli. Xavier also added a trio of freshmen, Jorge Santamaria, Deacon Thomas and Kyle Totorica.

at Ohio State

The Buckeyes went 28-4 last season with a 7-0 record against Big Ten opponents.
OSU took 4-0 wins over Michigan State and Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament to advance to the Championship match, falling 4-2 to Michigan.
Ohio State earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, taking 4-0 wins in the first two rounds over Youngstown State and Columbia. The Buckeyes topped No. 13 USC 4-2 in the Super Regionals and got the 4-2 win in the rematch with No. 5 Michigan to advance to the Final Four. OSU fell to No. 9 Kentucky, 4-1, in the semifinals
The Buckeyes took a 6-1 win over Xavier last January in Columbus.

vs. Northern Kentucky
Jan 20 – 5 PM

Northern Kentucky went 6-11 last season with a 1-7 record against Horizon League teams.
NKU fell, 4-1, to UIC in the Horizon League Quarterfinals.
Xavier took the 4-3 win over the Norse last season in Crestview Hills, Ky.

at Cleveland State
Jan 28 – 1:00 PM

Cleveland State went 12-12 overall last season with a 6-2 record in Horizon League play.
The Vikings fell, 4-2, to IUPUI in the Horizon League Semifinals.
Xavier won last season's match, 6-1, in Cincinnati.

vs. St. Bonaventure (at CSU)

The Bonnies went 7-13 overall last season with a 0-4 record in A10 play.
St. Bonaventure took a 4-2 win in the opening round of the A10 Tournament before falling to No. 1 seed VCU in the Quarterfinals.
Xavier last faced the Bonnies as an A10 opponent in 2013, taking the 7-0 win on the road. The Musketeers enter this season's match-up with an eight-match winning streak.

at IUPUI
Feb 3 – 12:00 PM

The Jags went 8-19 overall last season with a 3-5 record in Horizon League matches.
IUPUI took a 4-2 win over Cleveland State in the semifinals to advance to the Horizon League Tournament championship match, falling, 4-0, to Youngstown State.
The two teams faced off last season, with Xavier taking the 6-1 win in Cincinnati.

at Indiana
Feb 5 – 4:00 PM

The Hoosiers went 6-18 overall and 0-9 in Big Ten play last season.
IU topped Penn State, 4-3, in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament before falling 4-2 to Michigan in the quarterfinals.
Indiana took last season's meeting with the Musketeers, 4-0, in Bloomington.

vs. Bellarmine
Feb 10 – 6:00 PM

The Knights went 5-15 overall last season with a 1-7 record in ASUN play.
Xavier took the 6-1 win over the Knights in Louisville last season.

at Ball State
Feb 17 – 2 PM

Ball State went 10-11 overall with a 5-5 record in MAC play last season.
The Cardinals fell, 4-1, to Toledo in the MAC Semifinals.
In last season's match-up, Xavier took the 5-2 win in Cincinnati.

at Purdue
Feb 24 – 3 PM

The Boilermakers went 9-15 last season with a 2-7 record in Big Ten play.
Purdue fell, 4-3, to Michigan State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Xavier has faced the Boilermakers once previously, in 1989, according to Xavier record books.

vs. Southern Indiana

The Screaming Eagles went 10-10 last season with a 0-6 record in GLVC play.
This is USI's first year in NCAA DI.
Xavier last faced Southern Indiana in 1995, taking a 7-0 win.

vs. Creighton
March 4 – TBA

Creighton went 8-10 overall last season with a 1-3 record against BIG EAST opponents.
CU fell, 4-1, to DePaul in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship.
Xavier took the 5-2 win over the Bluejays last season in Orlando.

at Villanova

The Wildcats went 3-15 last season with a 0-3 record against BIG EAST teams during the regular season.
Villanova fell to No. 1 seed St. John's, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Xavier took the 6-1 win over VU in Cincinnati last season.

at Temple

The Owls went 12-10 last season and earned the No. 8 seed in the AAC Tournament.
Temple wrapped up the season in the American Athletic Conference Quarterfinals, falling to top-seeded SMU.
Xavier last faced the Owls in 2014, taking a 6-1 win in Philadelphia. The Musketeers bring a five-match winning streak into the 2023 match-up.

vs. Dayton

The Flyers went 16-8 overall last season with a 4-0 record in A10 matches.
UD took 4-0 wins over Saint Louis and Saint Joe's to advance to the A10 Championship match, where the Flyers fell to No. 1 VCU, 4-0.
Xavier faced Dayton last season, falling 4-3.

vs. DePaul

The Blue Demons went 13-13 last season with a 5-0 record in BIG EAST matches.
DePaul used a 4-1 win over Creighton and a 4-2 win over Xavier to advance to the BIG EAST Championship match, topping St. John's 4-2 to take the league title and earn a bid to the NCAA Championship.
DePaul fell 4-0 to No. 8 Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament first round.
The Blue Demons took a 6-1 win over Xavier in 2022's regular season match-up before taking the 4-2 win over the Musketeers in the BIG EAST Semifinals.

at Butler

The Bulldogs went 13-11 last season with a 3-3 record in BIG EAST play.
BU took a 4-3 win over Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship before falling to St. John's, 4-1, in the semis.
Xavier took the 4-3 win over Butler in last season's match-up, in Cincinnati.

vs. Marquette

The Golden Eagles went 7-16 overall and 3-4 in BIG EAST matches last season.
MU fell, 4-2, to Xavier in its opening match of the BIG EAST Tournament.
Xavier fell to Marquette, 4-3, in 2022's regular season match-up before taking a 4-2 win in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship.

vs. UIC

UIC went 5-19 overall and 2-6 in Horizon League matches.
The Flames took a 4-1 win over Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League Quarterfinals before falling 4-1 to No. 1 seeded Youngstown State in the Semifinals.
Xavier last played the Flames in 2008, a 4-3 win for UIC in Chicago.
