Musketeers take 1-0 win on goal in 86th minute, remain unbeaten in BIG EAST play

OMAHA, Neb. - A late goal from Sonia Vargas gave No. 20 Xavier women's soccer the 1-0 win at Creighton to keep the Musketeers' hopes for a portion of the BIG EAST regular season title alive. Xavier moved to 12-2-4 overall and remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play at 5-0-4.

The teams went into halftime scoreless after an evenly played first half, with the Bluejays holding a 6-4 advantage on shots, but Xavier holding a 4-2 advantage on shots on-goal, with each team earning four corners.

After the break, Xavier turned up the offensive pressure on CU, holding a 10-3 advantage on shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net until the final five minutes of the match.

The Musketeers broke through in the 86th minute when Sonia Vargas scored from Samantha Wiehe after getting behind the Creighton defense, setting the final score at 1-0.

Xavier will return home to close out the regular season, hosting Marquette on Thursday evening at Corcoran Field.

The Musketeers, who currently sit in second place with 19 points in the BIG EAST standings, have the opportunity to match first-place Georgetown with 22 points with a win on Thursday. The Hoyas wrapped up their regular season schedule with a win over Butler on Sunday, finishing at 6-0-4 to secure a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.

86' | XAVIER | Kennedy Clark tapped the ball to Samantha Wiehe in Xavier's attacking half of the field. Wiehe fed the ball ahead to Sonia Vargas who got past the Bluejay defense, brought the ball into the box, and tapped it past the CU goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.

NOTABLE

Sonia Vargas' goal was her fourth of the season and second game-winner. Combined with an assist, she now has nine points on the season.
Samantha Wiehe picked up an assist on Vargas' goal, matching Kennedy Clark for team-high with five helpers for the season. Wiehe also has six goals to lead the Musketeers with 17 points.
Xavier finished with a 14-9 advantage on shots and an 8-3 advantage on shots on-goal. Ella Rogers led Xavier with three looks, with two on-frame.
Maria Galley played the full time in-goal, picking up her 10th complete shutout of the season and her 21st as a Musketeer, matching Rachel Maxi (1984-86) for the second-most career shutouts in program records.
Natalie Bain, Maddie Reed and Ella Rogers played the full 90 minutes to help limit the Bluejays to just three shots on-goal. The Musketeer defense earned its fifth-straight shutout, not allowing a goal in over 450 minute of play, marking the 11th clean sheet of the season, tied for second-most in program history.
Xavier moved to 5-0-4 in conference play, trailing first place Georgetown at 6-0-4 with one match remaining for the Musketeers. The Hoyas wrapped up their regular season schedule on Sunday, securing at least a portion of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.
The win over Creighton extended Xavier's unbeaten streak in BIG EAST regular season games to 27 matches, dating back to September 2021.
