Musketeers take 1-0 win on goal in 86th minute, remain unbeaten in BIG EAST play
OMAHA, Neb. - A late goal from Sonia Vargas gave No. 20 Xavier women's soccer the 1-0 win at Creighton to keep the Musketeers' hopes for a portion of the BIG EAST regular season title alive. Xavier moved to 12-2-4 overall and remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play at 5-0-4.
The teams went into halftime scoreless after an evenly played first half, with the Bluejays holding a 6-4 advantage on shots, but Xavier holding a 4-2 advantage on shots on-goal, with each team earning four corners.
After the break, Xavier turned up the offensive pressure on CU, holding a 10-3 advantage on shots, but neither team was able to find the back of the net until the final five minutes of the match.
The Musketeers broke through in the 86th minute when Sonia Vargas scored from Samantha Wiehe after getting behind the Creighton defense, setting the final score at 1-0.
Xavier will return home to close out the regular season, hosting Marquette on Thursday evening at Corcoran Field.
The Musketeers, who currently sit in second place with 19 points in the BIG EAST standings, have the opportunity to match first-place Georgetown with 22 points with a win on Thursday. The Hoyas wrapped up their regular season schedule with a win over Butler on Sunday, finishing at 6-0-4 to secure a share of the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.
