Women's Soccer Hosts No. 12 Georgetown on Thursday Evening

Musketeers and Hoya set for 7 PM start on FS1
CINCINNATI - Xavier women's soccer (9-2-2; 2-0-2 BIG EAST) returns home to host another top-25 opponent, taking on No. 12 Georgetown on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Corcoran Field. The Musketeers and the Hoyas are set for a 7:00 p.m. start on FS1.
The Musketeers are receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week after moving to 2-0-2 in BIG EAST play with a 1-0 win over Villanova and a 1-1 draw at Seton Hall last week. Xavier remains ranked in the top 25 by College Soccer News (No. 19) and comes in at 28 in the most recent RPI.
After two weeks of conference play, Xavier currently matches UConn with eight points to sit in second place in the BIG EAST standings, trailing first place Georgetown has 10 points at 3-0-1.

- The No. 12 Hoyas are 7-1-4 overall, and have been ranked as high as No. 10 during this season, appearing in the USC poll each week this season.
- GU opened BIG EAST with wins over DePaul, St. John's and Creighton and playing UConn to a tie to sit at 3-0-1 in conference play, sitting on top of the conference standings with 10 points.

- Samantha Wiehe added a team-high matching fifth goal, and third game-winner, at DePaul. Combined with three assists, she leads Xavier with 13 points.
- Shelby Sallee also has a team-high matching five goals on the season, scoring in four of the last eight matches.
- Kennedy Clark has two goals and team-high matching four assists on the season for eight points. Jane Olcott also has a team-high matching four assists.
- Sonia Vargas' second half goal at Seton Hall was her third of the season, giving her six points on the year.

- Xavier remained unbeaten in BIG EAST action after playing Seton Hall to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.
- Xavier held a 6-2 advantage on shots in the first 45 minutes, but the game went into halftime still scoreless. In the second half, Seton Hall got on the board first, with SHU's Natalie Tavana scoring her league-high 10th goal of the season less than 10 minutes after the break.
- The Musketeers scored the equalizer midway through the second half, with Regan Dancer setting up Sonia Vargas for the goal to tie the match at 1-1. Xavier out-shot the Pirates 7-2 over the final 24 minutes of the match but were unable to find the go-ahead goal, setting the final score at 1-1.
- Sonia Vargas' second-half goal was her third of the season, giving her six points.
- Regan Dancer picked up an assist on Vargas' equalizer, her third of the season. Combined with two goals, she has seven points.
- Xavier finished with a 17-6 advantage on shots overall, but each team had four looks on-frame. Vargas and Natalie Bain each had three shots to lead the Musketeers.
- The Musketeers also held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks for the match.
- Maria Galley played the full time in-goal, finishing with three saves and one goal against.

- After helping Xavier stay unbeaten in BIG EAST play, graduate student Madison Ayson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
- In Xavier's 1-0 win over Villanova last Thursday, Ayson scored the eventual game-winner from in front of the goal off a pass from Kennedy Clark in the 66th minute.
- The goal was her second of the season, and first game-winner. She has five points on two goals and an assist.
- Ayson, a defender from Rocklin, Calif., also played over 40 minutes in both matches last week, helping limit Villanova to five shots in Xavier's win, and Seton Hall to six shots in the 1-1 draw, keeping Xavier unbeaten in conference play.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE |
- Xavier heads back out on the road this weekend, traveling to UConn on Sunday, Oct. 8, set for a 1:00 p.m. start on FloSports.
- UConn, which was picked sixth in the BIG EAST preseason poll, is 5-2-4 overall and currently matches Xavier with eight points in BIG EAST play with a 2-0-2 record.
- The Huskies opened up non conference play with a pair of wins, over Creighton and St. John's, and played Goergetown and Marquette to scoreless draws.
- UConn went 8-6-4 last season with a 4-4-2 record in BIG EAST play to earn the No. 6 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. The Huskies played St. John's to a 1-1 draw in the first round of the league tournament with the Red Storm advancing on PKs.
- Xavier is 2-0 all-time against the Huskies.
- The Musketeers took the 1-0 win in Cincinnati last season, with Regan Dancer scoring the game winner in the 25th minute.

2022 SEASON |
- Xavier, currently receiving votes in the USC poll, is coming off a 14-4-5 season in 2022.
- The Musketeers went 6-0-4 in BIG EAST play to finish second in the league standings, marking the first unbeaten conference slate in program history.
- Xavier earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship for a second-straight season, the program's fifth NCAA bid overall.
- In the NCAA Tournament, Xavier advanced for the second time in program history with a 4-1 double overtime win at Tennessee in the first round.

- The Musketeers return 19 letterwinners in all from last season, and added a pair of transfers in addition to a 10-person freshman class for the 2023 season.
- Xavier returns a trio of all-conference honorees from last season, with goalkeeper Maria Galley and defender Natalie Bain earning All-BIG EAST Second Team and All-Freshman Team honors, and forward Regan Dancer picking up a nod to the All-Freshman squad.
- Bain and junior midfielder Ella Rogers were selected to the 2023 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team.
