Musketeers Top No. 17 Friars, 85-83, in Overtime on Wednesday Night

Jack Nunge led No. 16 Xavier with 23 points and 14 rebounds
CINCINNATI - No. 16 Xavier men's basketball picked up an 85-83 overtime victory vs No. 17 Providence on Wednesday night at Cintas Center.
Xavier improves to 18-5 (10-2 BIG EAST), while the Friars dropped to 17-6 (9-3 BIG EAST).
The game featured seven ties and 18 lead changes. With the game tied at 73-73 with 54 seconds left in regulation, Adam Kunkel hit a three pointer to give Xavier a three-point lead. Jared Bynum hit the game-tying three pointer on the Friars ensuing possession. Souley Boum missed a three pointer as time expired, sending the Musketeers to their first overtime game of the season.
Xavier led by as many as five points (84-79) with 57 seconds left in overtime before the Friars scored four unanswered points to close within one point (84-83). Souley Boum hit a free throw with 13 seconds on the clock to give the Musketeers an 85-83 lead.
Jared Bynum missed the game-winning three pointer in the closing seconds as Xavier pulled out its fourth win over a ranked opponent this season.
• Jack Nunge posted a game-high 23 points and 14 rebounds, his seventh double-double of the season. The forward was 10-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-4 from behind the arc. He added three assists, two blocks and one steal. Nunge now has four, 20-point games this season.
• Colby Jones finished with 20 points on 9-for-16 shooting. The junior guard added three rebounds, two assists and two steals. He now six, 20-point games this season.
• Souley Boum posted 20 points on 7-for-19 shooting to go along with a game-high nine assists. The nine assists are also a season-high for the senior guard. Boum added three rebounds and one steal. He now has 10, 20-point games this season.
• Jerome Hunter chipped in nine points and eight rebounds. The senior forward added one assist and one block. Desmond Claude finished with seven points and five rebounds.
• Xavier finished the game with a .464 field-goal percentage (32-for-69) and was 8-for-23 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 13-for-23 from the foul line.
• Xavier finished the game with 22 assists, the team's 11th game of the year with 22 or more assists. The Musketeers committed a season-low five turnovers, tied for the second-fewest turnovers by a BIG EAST team this season. The five turnovers are the fewest in a game for the Musketeers since Jan. 9, 2019 vs Georgetown (had four turnovers).
• Providence won the battle on the glass, 44-40, and scored six more bench points (13-7). Xavier held a 16-15 advantage in second-chance points and scored eight more points in the paint (44-36). The Friars also scored one more fastbreak point (9-8) than the Musketeers.
• The Musketeers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 vs St. John's at Cintas Center. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. ET with the game being aired nationally on FOX.
