Xavier gets a season-high eight runs on 15 hits, including four homers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Xavier baseball had a season-high 15 hits, including four home runs, but a late surge from No. 16 Louisville gave the Musketeers the 12-8 set back at Jim Patterson Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Xavier took the one-run lead in the second inning on a solo home run from Jared Cushing. The Cardinals got the run back and moved in front on back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the frame.

In the third, Jack Housinger got aboard with a lead-off walk, and Matt McCormick drove him home on a two-run home run to put the Musketeers back in front, 3-2.

Xavier extended the lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning with three runs on four hits, and Louisville responded with a three-run bottom of the frame to cut the Xavier lead back to one, 6-5.

Matt McCormick's second home run of the day and Matthew DePrey's first homer of the season extended Xavier lead back to three, 8-5, headed into the bottom of the seventh, but two Cardinal runs in the seventh tied it up, and added four in the eighth to move in front, 12-8.

AT THE PLATE

Matt McCormick went 3-5 at the plate with a pair of home runs, driving in three RBI and scoring a pair or runs.
Matthew DePrey finished the day 3-5, picking up an RBI on his first home run of the season and scoring a pair of runs.
Jared Cushing (1-5) posted an RBI and a run scored after hitting his first home run of the season.
Hayden Christiansen went 2-4 in his first appearance as a Musketeer, scoring a run.
Garrett Schultz went 2-5, driving in an RBI and scoring a run.
Andrew Walker (1-3, 2 BB) and Jack Housinger (1-4, 1 BB, 1 R) each drove in an RBI.
Grant Stephenson (1-5) and Carter Hendrickson 1-3, 1 BB) each also had a hit as the Musketeers posted a season-high 15.

ON THE MOUND

Luke Hoskins made the start, allowing two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
Creighton Hansen entered in the third, issuing two walks in 0.1 inning.
Jonathan Kelly entered in the fourth, going 2.1 innings, striking out four, allowing three runs on four hits.
Justin Loer entered in the sixth inning with two on and one out, allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout.
