Musketeers Take 9-4 Win in Series Opener at Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Xavier baseball moved into the win column in the series opener at Western Carolina, with multi-RBI days for Hayden Christiansen and Grant Stephenson leading Xavier to the 9-4 win.
Xavier took the early lead, with Andrew Walker hitting a one-out single in the first, and stealing second to get into scoring position. Grant Stephenson hit an RBI single to left for the 1-0 lead.Â
Western Carolina scored a pair of runs in the third, one unearned, to move in front, holding the lead into the fifth.Â
In the fifth, Matthew DePrey singled up the middle to lead off the inning, and Hayden Christiansen followed with his first collegiate home run, a two-RBI shot to left center to put Xavier in front 3-2. Xavier added another run after Jack Housinger doubled to bring in Garrett Schultz, scoring three runs on four hits for the 4-2 lead.
The Catamounts cut the lead to one in the seventh inning, with the tying run on second with one out, but Justin Loer got out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground ball to keep the lead intact for the Musketeers.
Xavier added two more runs in the eighth on an RBI single from Christiansen to drive in Jack Housinger and Matt McCormick and picked up three more runs on the ninth on three hits, singles from Carter Hendrickson, Andrew Walker and Grant Stephenson.
Western Carolina added a run on a solo short to lead off the ninth, setting the final score at 9-4.
Game two of the series is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, subject to change due to weather.

- Ethan Bosacker went 5.0 innings in his second start of the season, allowing two runs, with just one earned, on five hits, with six strikeouts to three walks. Bosacker picked up the win.
- Jonathan Kelly entered in the sixth, going 1.1 innings with one run allowed on three hits with a strikeout.
- Justin Loer entered with one on and one out in the seventh inning, getting the Musketeers out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground ball. He went 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four.
- Connor Bailey pitched the ninth, allowing one run on one hit, striking out one
