Cushing collects five RBI on two home runs, including first grand slam as a Musketeer

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Jared Cushing hit home runs six and seven of the season to drive in five RBI and help Xavier to a 8-3 win in the series finale at No. 24 West Virginia.

After the Mountaineers took a one-run lead in the first, the Musketeers loaded the bases in the next frame, with Matt McCormick and Carter Hendrickson each getting hit by a pitch and Garrett Schultz taking a walk. Cushing's first home run of the day cleared the bases to put Xavier in front 4-1,

West Virginia picked up a run in the third to cut the lead back to two, 4-2, but an Andrew Walker long-ball, a two-run shot to right, extended the lead out to 6-2.

The Mountaineers again responded in the bottom fo the frame to pull within three, 6-3, which held in to the sixth where the Matthew DePrey drove in an RBI with a sac bunt, scoring Cushing to make it 7-3 Xavier.

Cushing added another run for the Musketeers with his second home run of the day, a solo shot, to extend the lead to five, 8-3.

The Musketeers will play a pair of midweek games on the road before returning home next weekend, starting with Ohio State on Tuesday, March 28, set to start at 6:00 p.m. on Big Ten Network Plus.

ON THE MOUND

Luke Bell made the start, going 4.0 innings with three earned runs allowed on six hits, striking out five with three walks.
Creighton Hansen entered for the fifth, going 0.2 innings, not allowing a run or a hit but issuing three walks.
Jonathan Kelly entered with two outs and two on in the fifth, getting a strikeout to get out of the frame. Kelly went 2.1 innings, not allowing a run, giving up one hit and one walk. Kelly picked up the win, his first of the season.
Justin Loer came in for the eighth, pitching a scoreless inning, not allowing a hit and walking a pair.
Clay Schwaner pitched the ninth, not allowing a run or a hit and walking one.

AT THE PLATE

Jared Cushing finished with a career-high five RBI after going 3-4 at the plate, with two home runs including his first grand slam as a Musketeer, and scored a team-high three runs. He now has seven home runs on the season.
Andrew Walker hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth, finishing with two RBI.
Matthew DePrey drove in an RBI with a sac bunt.
Jack Housinger recorded a hit and a walk.
