Musketeers host Seton Hall for three games, starting Friday

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball used a big first inning to move in front early and never relinquished the lead, extending its win streak to four games after topping Eastern Kentucky, 7-3, at Hayden Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Musketeers moved to 26-15 on the season.

The Musketeers jumped out to lead early, scoring five runs on four hits in the first inning, with RBIs for Tyler DeMartino, Matt McCormick, Jared Cushing and Alex Helmin.

Eastern Kentucky cut the lead back to three, 5-2, with solo home runs in the third and fourth innings, and pulled within two, 5-3, with a run in the top of the sixth.

Tyler DeMartino extended the lead back to four in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a two-run homer to left field to make it 7-3 Xavier. EKU threatened in the eighth, getting the first two batters aboard, before Justin Loer came in from the bullpen to get the Musketeers out of the inning, closing out the game without allowing a run.

Xavier remains at home to host Seton Hall for three games, set to begin on Friday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Hayden Field.

ON THE MOUND

Jack Niedringhaus made his first collegiate start, going 3.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and getting a strikeout. Niedringhaus picked up the win to move to 1-0.
Connor Bailey entered in the fourth, going 1.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits with a walk.
Jonathan Kelly entered with two on and one out in the fifth, allowing one run on two hits and walk in 2.2 innings of work. Kelly finished with two strikeouts.
Nick Boyle faced two batters in the eighth, issuing one walk.
Justin Loer entered with two on an no outs in the eighth, not allowing a run or a hit and finishing with three strikeouts to one walk. Loer picked up his second save of the season.

AT THE PLATE

Tyler DeMartino went 3-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. He hit his team-high matching 10th home run of the season in the sixth, a two-run shot to left.
Matt McCormick went 3-3 at the plate, finishing with an RBI and a run scored.
Jared Cushing went 2-4, driving in two RBIs on a double in the first inning.
Alex Helmin finished with an RBI.
Carter Hendrickson went 1-2 with two walks, scoring a run.
Matthew DePrey (1-4, 2 R), Andrew Walker (1-5, 1 R) and Jack Housinger (1-4) all recorded a hit on a 12-hit day for the Musketeers.
