Xavier heads to St. John's for three-game series this weekend

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball fell, 8-6, after rallying late against Indiana on Wednesday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Musketeers move to 30-19 overall on the season.

Home runs in the first and second innings game the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead headed into bottom of the second. Jared Cushing hit a solo home run in the third to cut the lead back to 3-1, but Indiana added runs in the third and fourth to take a 7-1 lead into the bottom of four.

Xavier responded with two runs of its own in the next frame, with Carter Hendrickson leading off with a single and Teddy Deters bringing him in with a two-run homer to cut the advantage back to four, 7-3.

Indiana added another run to its lead fifth before Connor Bailey and Justin Loer combined to limit the Hoosiers to just one base runner the rest of the way, facing the minimum in three of the final four innings.

IU took the five run lead into the bottom of the eighth, where the Musketeers scored three runs on three hits. Carter Hendrickson lead the inning off with a walk, and a single form Alex Helmin put two on with one out for Teddy Deters. Deters brought both base runners in with a triple, then came home on a sac fly from Connor Misch to cut the lead back to 8-6. Jack Housinger singled to get the tying run to the plate, but the Musketeers were unable to get any closer, falling by a pair of runs.

Xavier heads out on the road, traveling to St. John's for a three-game BIG EAST series, set to get underway on Friday, May 12 and run through Sunday, May 14. Game one is set to get underway at 6:00 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

ON THE MOUND

Nick Boyle made the start, going 3.0 innings, allowing five runs on three hits, striking out three and issuing two walks.
Jack Niedringhaus entered for the fourth inning, going 1.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits and two walks.
Connor Bailey entered with one on and one out in the fifth, going 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Justin Loer entered for the ninth, pitching a 1-2-3 inning to keep the Musketeers within a pair of runs going into the final half inning.

AT THE PLATE

Teddy Deters finished 2-4 with a career-high four RBIs and two runs scored after hitting a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his second home run of the season, and a two-RBI triple in the eighth.
Jared Cushing (1-4) hit his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot in the second inning
Carter Hendrickson finished with a hit (1-4) and walk, scoring a pair of runs.
Jack Housinger went 2-3 with a walk. Andrew Walker (1-4) and Alex Helmin (1-4) each recorded a hit as well as the Musketeers out-hit the Hoosiers, 8-6.
