
Mayo Scores Game-High 20 Points in Loss to Friars

Providence tops Xavier, 69-60, on Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center
CINCINNATI - Freshman Aizhanique Mayo scored a game-high 20 points on Saturday afternoon as the Musketeers dropped a 69-60 contest vs Providence at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers moved to 1-17 (0-9 BIG EAST), while the Friars improved to 11-11 (5-4 BIG EAST).
The game featured eight ties and four lead changes with neither team leading by more than nine points in the contest.
Xavier led by two points (37-35) at the break and opened the second half by outscoring Providence, 4-2, to take its largest lead of the game (41-37) with 8:05 on the clock in the third frame. The Friars responded by scoring 11 unanswered points, taking a 48-41 advantage and a lead they would not relinquish.
Xavier closed within one point, 50-49, on a Nila Blackford layup with 8:34 left in regulation. The Friars went on a 12-4 run to push their lead out to nine points (62-53) with 2:46 on the clock.
A pair of Tae'lor Purvis free throws with 54 seconds left in regulation got the Musketeers within four points (64-60). Providence held Xavier scoreless for the remainder of the contest and went 5-for-6 from the foul like to escape Cintas Center with its third straight win.
• Aizhanique Mayo scored a game-high 20 points on 8-for-15 shooting, the first 20-point game of her career. The freshman guard added three rebounds and two steals.
• Xavier recorded a season-high in steals for the second time in as many games, posting 15 steals. The Musketeers now have five games on the year with 10 or more steals. Xavier forced 22 turnovers, covering the miscues into 19 points.
• Mackayla Scarlett added 17 points on 6-for-16 shooting, her eighth game of the season in double figures. She added three steals and one rebound. The senior guard now has 33 career double-figure scoring games.
• Tae'lor Purvis rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points, her fourth game of the season in double figures. The guard added a game-high five assists and four steals.
• Nila Blackford pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and scored six points. Daniela López chipped in six points and a game-high four steals.
• Xavier went 14-for-14 from the foul line, the team's second game of the season going perfect from the charity stripe (went 11-for-11 at Villanova on Dec. 30).
• The Musketeers were also 21-for-58 from the field and 4-for-19 from behind the arc.
• Providence won the battle on the glass, 32-25, and scored six more points in the paint (32-26). Xavier held a 26-20 advantage in bench points and scored six more fastbreak points (14-8).
