
Musketeers Suffer Setback vs Red Storm on Wednesday Night

Tae’lor Purvis recorded a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds
QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier women's basketball dropped a 67-55 road contest on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena.
Xavier moved to 1-18 (0-10 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Red Storm improved to 14-9 (8-3 BIG EAST).
The Musketeers led by two points (44-42) on a Tae'lor Purvis layup with 1:15 left in the third quarter. St. John's scored back-to-back baskets to end the frame, taking a 46-44 advantage.
The Red Storm never relinquished the lead and took their first double-figure advantage, 60-49, with 2:29 left in regulation. St. John's outscored Xavier, 21-11, in the final quarter to pull away for the victory.
Xavier led by as many as 10 points twice late in the second quarter. The game featured seven lead changes and six ties. The Musketeers led for nearly 15 minutes in the contest.
• Tae'lor Purvis posted a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds. The guard added two assists, two blocks and one steal.
• Mackayla Scarlett finished with 15 points, three assists and three rebounds. The guard added a team and game-high five steals.
• Nila Blackford rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting. The forward added seven rebounds.
• Júlia Garcia Roig finished with six points, two rebounds and two assists. Daniela López added five points, three rebounds and two assists.
• St. John's won the battle on the glass, 38-32, and and scored two more points off of turnovers (19-17). Xavier scored four more second-chance points (6-2) and held a 14-9 advantage in bench points. The Musketeers also scored two more points in the paint (30-28).
• Xavier finished the game with a .362 field-goal percentage (21-for-58) and went 4-for-16 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 9-for-11 from the foul line.
• Xavier returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 6 vs No. 22 Creighton. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
