
Scarlett Scores Career-High 26 Points in Loss to No. 21 Creighton

The Bluejays topped the Musketeers, 77-46, on Tuesday night at Cintas Center
CINCINNATI - Mackayla Scarlett scored a career-high 26 points on Tuesday night as the Musketeers dropped a 77-46 contest vs No. 21 Creighton at Cintas Center.
Xavier moved to 1-19 (0-11 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays improved to 19-3 (10-2 BIG EAST).
The two teams were tied at 13-13 in the first quarter before Creighton went on a 6-2 run to close the frame, making the score 19-15. The Bluejays outscored Xavier, 17-10, in the second quarter - taking the game's first double-figure lead (36-25) into the locker room.
Creighton outscored Xavier, 41-21, in the second half behind a .552 field-goal percentage (16-for-29) to pull away for the Bluejays ninth straight win.
• Mackayla Scarlett scored a career and game-high 26 points on 9-for-20 shooting. The senior guard was 5-for-11 from behind the arc and 3-for-4 from the foul line. She added five rebounds a career and game-high five steals (also had five steals at St. John's on Jan. 31, 2024). Scarlett now has five career 20-point performances.
• Aizhanique Mayo added eight points on 3-for-9 shooting in 21 minutes off the bench. Daniela López chipped in seven points and five rebounds.
• Taylor Smith pulled down a season-high seven rebounds in her first start of the season. The guard added three points.
• Júlia Garcia Roig finished with a team-high four assists. The freshman guard added four rebounds and two points.
• Creighton won the battle on the glass, 46-31, and scored 10 more second-chance points (15-5). The Bluejays also held a 15-12 advantage in points off of turnovers and scored 10 more points in the paint (28-18). Creighton held an 18-0 advantage in fastbreak points.
• Xavier finished the game with a .304 field-goal percentage (17-for-56) and went 6-for-20 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 6-for-9 from the foul line.
• Xavier only had eight players available on Tuesday night due to injury or illness. Head coach Billi Chambers also missed the game due to illness. Associate head coach Ashlee Kelly served as the team's acting head coach.
• Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Seton Hall. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. from Walsh Gymnasium.
