Musketeers Fall at No. 19 Marquette on Saturday Afternoon

Daniela López led Xavier with a season-high 13 points vs the Golden Eagles
MILWAUKEE - Xavier women's basketball dropped an 81-52 BIG EAST road contest at No. 19 Marquette on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center.
The Musketeers move to 1-11 (0-3 BIG EAST), while the Golden Eagles improve to 13-2 (2-2 BIG EAST).
Xavier opened the game by scoring eight unanswered points before the Golden Eagles responded with a 12-2 run, taking a two-point lead (12-10) into the second quarter. Marquette never relinquished the lead and outscored the Musketeers, 23-5, in the second frame to take a 35-15 advantage into the break.
The Golden Eagles led by double figures for the remainder of the contest, capturing the team's 15th straight victory over the Musketeers.
Xavier outscored Marquette, 22-19, in the fourth quarter on 9-for-14 shooting. Nila Blackford and Daniela López each had eight points in the final frame.
• Daniela López led the Musketeers with a career-high 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting. The freshman guard has scored in double figures in back-to-back games. She added one steal and was 3-for-6 from behind the arc. The guard now leads the team in scoring in BIG EAST only games, averaging 11.0 points per game with a .500 field-goal percentage (13-for-26).
• Nila Blackford added nine points and a game-high nine rebounds, just missing her 27th career double-double. The forward was 4-for-6 from the floor.
• Aizhanique Mayo finished with eight points, three rebounds and a pair of three pointers. Taylor Smith and Kaysia Woods both added five points.
• Júlia Garcia Roig finished with four points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. The guard was 2-for-5 from the floor.
• Marquette won the battle on the glass, 37-28, and held a 28-8 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Golden Eagles forced 28 Xavier turnovers.
• Marquette held a 23-4 advantage in fastbreak points and scored 10 more bench points (28-18). Marquette also scored 18 more points in the paint (38-20) and held a 22-5 advantage in second-chance points.
• Xavier posted a .435 field-goal percentage (20-for-46) and went 7-for-19 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 5-for-8 from the foul line.
• Xavier returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 9 vs St. John's. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
