The Xavier Musketeers put up a solid performance in the opening round of the Grier Jones Shocker Invitational, finishing tied for second with host Wichita State and Incarnate Word. All three teams sit at +5 (293), just three strokes behind the current leader, the University of Denver, which leads at +2 (290). The event is being held at Sand Creek Station Golf Course, a challenging Par 72, 7,491-yard layout in Newton, Kansas.
Xavier demonstrated consistency across the round, with their 15 birdies tying them for third most in the field, just behind Denver (18) and Wichita State (17). However, the team struggled slightly on the par 3s, averaging 3.15 strokes, which put them +3 on these holes. Despite these challenges, the Musketeers excelled on the par 5s, finishing the day -1, with an average score of 4.95, positioning them competitively in that category.Â
Denver leads the way with a -7 score on the par 5s, a key factor in their first-round lead.
Xavier's standout after round 1 was player was Ray Filter, who fired a stellar 2-under 70 in very windy conditions to secure a share of 3rd place individually. His steady play kept the Musketeers competitive on a challenging course. Kellen Dean also contributed a solid performance, shooting a 1-over 73 to tie for 13th. Carson Bellish added a 2-over 74, while Leo Walling finished with a 4-over 76, rounding out the team's top contributors.
As the tournament progresses, Xavier will look to build on its strong birdie count and improve its performance on par 3 and par 4 holes to make a run for the top spot.
