Luke Hoskins has career-high nine strikeouts
Xavier took the lead in the second when Luke Hammond got aboard with a hit-by-pitch, moved to third on a double from Carter Hendrickson and scored on a FGCU error. Jared Cushing hit an RBI single to score Hendrickson to give Xavier the 2-0 lead.
FGCU scored a pair in the third and the 2-2 tie held into the fifth where Xavier plated three runs to move back in front. Jared Cushing led off the inning with a single and Isaac Wachsmann walked to put two on for Grant Stephenson, who doubled down the left field line to drive in Cushing to put Xavier back in front 3-2. Wachsmann came home on a wild pitch and Matt McCormick drove in Stephenson with a groundball to make it a 5-2 Xavier lead.
In the sixth, Carter Hendrickson hit a one-out double and advanced to third on an fielding error and Jared Cushing drove him in with a sac fly to make it 6-2. A solo home run from the Eagles cut the Xavier lead back to three, 6-3.
Back-to-back doubles from Grant Stephenson and Matthew DePrey to lead off the seventh drove in Xavier's seventh run, and Matt McCormick drove in an eighth run, driving in DePrey with an RBI single.
FGCU scored three in the eighth, but in the ninth, Aedan Anderson hit a two-run homer, driving in Connor Misch who led off the inning with a walk, to set the final score at 10-6 in favor of Xavier.
Game two with the Eagles is set for a 2:00 p.m. start on Saturday, March 2.
