Musketeers collect 18 wins over three-day event

MUNCIE, Ind. - Xavier men's tennis combined to pick up 18 wins at the three-day Ball State Invite to open the fall season. The Musketeers picked up 12 singles wins and six doubles win in the hidden dual format, facing off with Butler, Dayton and IU Indy in addition to the host Cardinals.

On day one, Xavier took on Dayton in singles, and faced IU Indy and Ball State in doubles. The Musketeers picked up three singles wins on the first day, with Pascal Mosberger taking a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 win over UD's Brady Hussey, Christian Gonzalez taking a 6-4, 4-6, 10-1 win over the Flyers' Sturle Skigelstrand, and Marco Pennelli defeating Dayton's Kaia Mendibe, 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles play on day one, the Musketeers took three wins, with Charlie Temming and Alex Kotarski taking a 6-4 win over a duo from IU Indy in the first round of the doubles for the day. Temming then combined with Ryan Cahill to take a 7-6 (4) win over Webster and Smith of Ball State, while Christian Gonzalez and Kyle Totorica picked up a 6-2 win over Hayward and Petrovic of Ball State.

On day two, the Musketeers faced Butler in doubles and singles, then took on Ball State in singles. Against Butler, the Musketeers picked up four total wins, with Kyle Totorica and Marco Pennelli taking a 7-5 doubles win over the Bulldogs' Lama and Pensavalle.

In singles against the Bulldogs, Christian Gonzalez picked up his second singles win of the weekend, taking a 6-2, 6-2 win over Butler's Riccardo Baldi. Marco Pennelli picked up his second singles win of the weekend, defeating BU's Arnesi Singh, 6-3, 7-6 (2), and Andrew Spurck took a 6-0, 7-5 win over the Bulldogs' Cristian Pensavalle.

In the second round of singles on day two, Xavier picked up three more wins. Marco Pennelli's second singles win of the day, and third of the weekend, was a 6-0, 6-4 win over Broc Fletcher of Ball State. Andrew Spurck also picked up a second singles win for the day, topping Ball State's Anthony Shalakov, 6-3, 6-4. Alex Kotarski took a 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 win over BSU's Drew Hayward as well.

Xavier opened up the final day with a pair of doubles wins over the Flyers. Ryan Cahill and Pascal Mosberger picked up a 6-1 win over the Flyers' McNally and Hussey, and Charlie Temming and Christian Gonzalez defeated Phillips and Skigelstrand, 6-4.

The Musketeers wrapped up the weekend with singles against IU Indy, taking three singles wins. Christian Gonzalez picked up his third singles win of the weekend, going 3-of-4 in singles for the tournament, with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win over Nate Day of IU Indy. Charlie Temming picked up a 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-7 win over the Jaguars' Eli Mercer. Alex Kotarski went 2-for-2 in singles matches for the weekend, taking a 6-3, 6-4 win over IU Indy's Jai Dutta.

Xavier returns to Ball State for the Cardinal Invitational, running from Sept. 28-29. The two-day event will feature Ball State, Bellarmine, Butler and Xavier.
