Meri Kanerva led Xavier with 11 points on Saturday
CINCINNATI - Xavier dropped a 60-39 BIG EAST contest vs St. John's on Saturday afternoon at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers moved to 5-11 (0-5 BIG EAST), while the Red Storm improved to 11-5 (1-5 BIG EAST).
Xavier continues BIG EAST action at Providence on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Alumni Hall.

The Musketeers moved to 5-11 (0-5 BIG EAST), while the Red Storm improved to 11-5 (1-5 BIG EAST).

NOTABLE
- St. John's opened the game on an 11-0 run behind 4-for-5 shooting, forcing a Xavier timeout with 6:53 on the clock. The Red Storm hit 50 percent (7-for-14) of their shot attempts in the first quarter, taking a 20-6 advantage over the Musketeers.
- The Musketeers responded by scoring 12 straight points to open the second frame, closing within two points (20-18) with 1:50 on the clock. St. John's and Xavier exchanged baskets in the closing minutes of the half, making the score 23-20 in favor of the Red Storm at the break.
- St. John's opened the second half on an 13-2 run behind 5-for-7 shooting, taking a 36-22 advantage and forcing a Xavier timeout with 4:25 on the clock. The Red Storm outscored Xavier, 22-7, in the third quarter to take an 18-point lead (45-27).
- St. John's outscored Xavier, 15-12, in the final quarter to pull away for its first BIG EAST win of the season.
- Meri Kanerva led the Musketeers with 11 points and and a team-high four steals. The freshman guard has now scored in double figures 10 times this season.
- Petra Oborilova added eight points a team-high six rebounds and five assists. She added one steal.
- Daniela López and Irune Orio both added six points and combined to pull down five rebounds.
- Tae'lor Purvis finished with five points, one rebound, one block and one steal. Loren Christie had two blocks and two rebounds in 13 minutes of action.
- Xavier finished the game with a .341 field-goal percentage (15-for-44) and went 6-for-20 from behind the arc. The Musketeers were also 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.
- Xavier won the battle on the glass, 27-26. St. John's held an 18-4 advantage in points off of turnovers and scored two more points in the paint (16-14) than Xavier.
- The Red Storm scored four more second-chance points (6-2) than Xavier and held a 7-2 advantage in fastbreak points.
- St. John's finished the game 22-for-46 from the floor and 10-for-21 from behind the arc. The Red Storm were 6-for-10 from the foul line.
