Women's Tennis Wraps Up Three Days of Action at Michigan State Spartan Invite

Musketeers collect 17 wins against trio of Big Ten Schools
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Xavier women's tennis collected 17 wins at the three-day Michigan State Spartan Invite over the weekend, competing against the host Spartans as well as student-athletes from Michigan and Indiana.
Against Michigan State on Friday, Xavier picked up four wins in singles play, with Abby Nugent taking a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Matilde Morais, Abigail Siminski taking a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sarah Fazlagic, Emily Flowers defeating Oriana Parkins-Godwin, 6-4, 6-3, and Natalie Smitek leading Issey Purser, 7-5, when the match was retired due to illness.
On Saturday, the Musketeers picked up four more singles wins over Michigan, with Nugent picking up her second singles win of the weekend, a 6-4, 6-2 win over Anlin Xie, Madeleine Rexroat defeating Jeselle Ante, 6-3, 6-2, and Ella DeFord topping Mia Liepert, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Ellie Brotherton also picked up a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Michigan's Arina Valitova on Sunday.
Xavier closed out singles play on Sunday against IU with a pair of wins, after Clara Owen took a 6-0, 6-2 win voer Li Hsin Lin and Siminski defeated Mansi Vadyala, 6-4, 6-2, for her second singles win. Ellie Brotherton also defeated Indiana's Chase Boyer 6-2, 6-4, on Friday, and Sofia Mazzucato defeated IU's Li Hsin Lin, 3-6, 7-5 6-3, on Saturday to make it four wins against the Hoosiers.
In doubles play, the Musketeers opened up action against Michigan, picking up two wins. Abby Nugent and Clara Owen took a 7-5 win over Jeselle Ante and Sofia Pinto. Ella DeFord and Madeleine Rexroat also defeated Nora Knezevic and Arina Valitova, 6-4.
Xavier also picked up three more doubles wins against IU, with Nugent and Owen taking a 6-3 win over Ameia Sorey and Nicole Teodosescu, DeFord and Rexroat topping Elisabeth Dunac and Li Hsin Lin, 6-3, and Emily Flowers and Natalie Smitek defeating Chase Boyer and Magdalena Swierczynska, 7-5.
Next weekend, Abby Nugent and Clara Owen, the No. 40 ranked doubles team in the ITA Preseason Rankings, will represent the BIG EAST at the ITA Conference Masters Championships, played in San Diego from Nov. 6-9. Nugent will also represent the BIG EAST singles bracket at the tournament.
