03.14.25 | Baseball
Christiansen, Burdette homer for Xavier
NEW ORLEANS - Xavier baseball fell in the series opener at Tulane, 5-2, on Friday evening at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.Â
Tulane took a 1-0 lead in the second, but a solo home run from Hayden Christiansen tied it a 1-1 in the next half inning. The Green Wave threatened in the bottom of the third, with two on and one out, but a diving catch in right for Clay Burdette started a 9-6 double play to send the game to the fourth.
In the fourth, Burdette put the Musketeers in front after hitting a solo home run to make it a 2-1 Xavier lead. The one-run lead held in to the sixth, with help from an over-the-fence catch from Carter Hendrickson in the fifth to rob Tulane of a home run that would have tied the game.
Tulane got a run in the sixth to tie it, but another great play for Burdette, this time at the right field fence with two on and one out in the frame, helped keep the game even at 2-2.
A three-run frame in the seventh would move the Green Wave in front for good, setting the final score at 5-2
Game two of three with the Green Wave is set for Saturday, now scheduled for a 7:30 PM ET start due to forecasted rain earlier in the day.
