Musketeers score three in the ninth to take 6-5 win

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball opened up the home schedule with a walk-off winner in game one against Ball State, scoring three runs in the ninth to take the 6-5 win.

Ball State scored a pair in the first, taking the 2-0 lead into the third where back-to-back doubles from Jason Jelic and Aedan Anderson drove in a run for the Musketeers to cut it to 2-1. BSU responded with a three-run frame in the fourth to lead 5-1.

Xavier got runs back in the fifth and sixth, with Anderson leading off the fifth with a walk and coming around to score, and Clay Burdette leading off the sixth with a double, scoring on a sac fly from Nolan Tucker to cut BSU's lead to 5-3.

The Musketeers held the Cardinal off the board for the final five frames, and in the ninth, walks for Jake Lambdin and Carter Hendrickson with one out put two on for Connor Misch. An RBI single from Misch through the left side brought in Lambdin, and an double from Isaac Wachsmann drove in Hendrickson to tie it up. Burdette hit a single up the middle to bring in pinch runner Donavan Canterberry to set the final score at 6-5.

The Musketeers and the Cardinals will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader, set to begin at 11:30 a.m.

AT THE PLATE

Clay Burdette finished 3-5 at the plate, driving in the game winning RBI and scoring a run.
Connor Misch went 2-5 with an RBI.
Isaac Wachsmann finished with an RBI after driving in the tying run in the ninth with a double.
Nolan Tucker finished with an RBI on a sac fly.
Aedan Anderson went 1-3 with a walk, finishing with an RBI and a run scored.
Jake Lambdin (1-3, 2 BB), Carter Hendrickson (1-4, 1 BB) and Jason Jelic (1-4) each recorded a hit and scored a run. Donavan Canterberry also scored a run.

Ryan Piech went 3.2 innings in the start, allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks, striking out five.
Logan Schmidt pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing four hits and two walks, striking out two.
Eli Bridenthal pitched the eight, not allowing a run, allowing on hit and a walk.
Jack DeTienne pitched the ninth, allowing one hit in a 1.0 scoreless inning of work, striking out one and picking up the win.
