Musketeers return home to open up BIG EAST play against UConn
A two-run homer from Nolan Tucker got the Musketeers on the board first. Xavier posted a three-run frame in the fifth, with Jason Jelic leading off the inning with a triple and scoring on a fielder's choice from Carter Hendrickson. Connor Misch was hit by a pitch to put two on for Isaac Wachsmann, who brought in Hendrickson and Misch with a double to make it a 5-0 Xavier lead.
In the sixth, Xavier got a walk from Tucker, a single from Luke Hammond and a walk from Aedan Anderson to load the bases for Jake Lambdin with one out. Lambdin brought in Tucker with a groundball to make it a 6-0 Xavier lead.
Logan Schmidt made the start, not allowing a Kentucky run in the first six innings, and giving up just a pair in a season-long 6.1 innings pitched. Jack Nobe entered in the seventh and went 1.2 innings, including pitching a 1-2-3 eighth.
The Musketeers picked up three more runs in the ninth, with Clay Burdette, Tucker and Hammond each taking a walk to load the bases with no outs. Two runs came in on a double from Jason Jelic, and another scored on a sac fly from Lambdin to stretch the lead out to seven, 9-2. Kentucky added a run in the ninth to set the final score at 9-3.
Xavier returns home to open BIG EAST play this weekend, hosting UConn for a three-game series, starting Friday, March 28, and running through Sunday, March 30 at Hayden Field.
