Baseball Takes 8-6 Win in BIG EAST Opener Against UConn

The Musketeers and Huskies set to play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 12 PM
UConn led off the game with a solo home run and took the 1-0 lead into the third. Jason Jelic led off the bottom of the inning with a walk, and Jake Lambdin took a one-out walk to put two on for Carter Hendrickson. The centerfielder cleared the bases with a home run down the left field line to put the Musketeers in front 3-1.
Xavier added runs in the next two innings to extend the lead. Clay Burdette led of the fourth with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt from Nolan Tucker, and came home on a fielder's choice to make it a 4-1 Xavier lead. The Musketeers added two more runs on four hits in the fifth, with Lambdin and Hendrickson leading off the inning with singles. Connor Misch brought in Lambdin with an RBI single, and Burdette drove in Hendrickson with a single to make it a 6-1 Xavier lead.
The Musketeers picked up two more runs in in the eighth after Luke Hammond led off the inning with a double and Aedan Anderson brought him in with a home run to make it a seven-run lead, 8-1.
UConn put together a five-run top of the ninth inning to pull within two, but were unable to tie it up, setting the final score at 8-6 in favor of the Musketeers.
The Musketeers and the Huskies will wrap up the three game series on Saturday with a doubleheader, set to begin at 12 p.m. at Hayden Field.

- Carter Hendrickson went 3-of-5 at the plate, driving in three RBI with his fourth home run of the season, scoring a pair of runs.
- Aedan Anderson (1-4) drove in a pair of RBI and scored a run with his fourth home run of the season.
- Connor Misch finished 2-4 with a walk, driving in an RBI.
- Clay Burdette went 2-3 driving in an RBI and scoring a run.
- Luke Hammond (1-4) drove in an RBI and scored a run.
- Jake Lambdin finished with a hit (1-4) and walk, scoring a pair of runs.
- Jason Jelic got on with a walk, scoring a run.
- Ryan Piech made the start, allowing one run on one hit in 5.0 innings of work, finishing with a career-high matching seven strikeouts to just one walk. Piech earned the win, his second of the season.
- Jack Nobe entered for the sixth, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, striking out one and walking one.
- Eli Bridenthal entered for the ninth, facing a pair of batters. Jon Wylie also faced a batter in the ninth.
- Joseph Chavana came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the ninth, going 0.2 innings.
- Jake Hooker picked up the final out of the game with a strikeout, earning the save.
