Meri Kanerva Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

NEW YORK - Meri Kanerva was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. She is the fourth different Musketeer to earn the honors this season.

The sophomore guard averaged 13.5 points, 7.0 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game last week, helping the Musketeers post a 1-1 record. She added a .429 field-goal percentage (12-for-28) and went 2-for-7 from behind the arc. Kanerva added three steals and averaged 38.5 minutes per game.

The Espoo, Finland, native scored 13 points and dished out a game-high seven assists in the loss vs Marquette on Jan. 1. She scored 14 points (all in the second half) at Georgetown on Jan. 4. The guard added a game-high seven assists vs the Hoyas.

Kanerva scored the game-winning basket at Georgetown with 6.5 seconds left in regulation. The win at Georgetown snapped a 30-game BIG EAST road losing streak, giving Xavier its first road BIG EAST victory since Feb. 20, 2022 at Butler (W, 73-54). The win also snapped an eight-game losing streak vs the Hoyas.

The Musketeers conclude their BIG EAST road trip on Thursday, Jan. 8 at Villanova. Tip-off is slated for 11:30 a.m. from Finneran Pavilion with the game being aired on ESPN+.
