Xavier Falls to St. John's on the Road in Five Sets

QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier fell in five sets to St. John's on the road Friday, Oct. 2. Â
The loss marks the first in league action for the Musketeers as they move to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST. Â
Xavier dropped the first set 25-13 against the Red Storm. St. John's went up 5-0 to begin the set, and the Musketeers never rallied within three points for the remainder of the set. Xavier had 12 kills in the frame with Charlotte Moriarty claiming five. Â
XU responded with a 26-24 second set to tie the match. Down 9-6, Xavier went on a 6-0 run with four Moriarty kills and two Johnnie errors. The Musketeers extended their lead 16-12 by three errors and a kill from Catherine Flaharty. With the set tied 24 all, a kill from Moriarty and back-to-back St. John's errors would secure the set for Xavier. Â
St. John's claimed the third set 25-22 despite 15 Musketeer kills. Ava Tilden tallied seven of Xavier's 15 in the frame. XU started the set on a 6-1 run with kills from Flaharty, Tilden and Margo Kemp. Xavier led 10-5, but St. John's rallied to narrow the gap and tie the set at 14 all. Xavier held set point off for two serves but would ultimately fall to the Red Storm. Â
The Musketeers had a dominating 25-13 fourth set victory. Xavier led 15-8 at the media timeout with 10 kills and an ace from Kelsey Niesen. Kasey Quenichet notched an ace of her own to go up 18-9 over the Red Storm. A trio of kills from Moriarty, Gabby Semona and Macy Hatkevich would bring XU up 21-10. A Red Storm error and a final kill from Tilden would solidify a fifth set Friday evening. Â
In the final frame, St. John's and Xavier remained tied through four points but a Musketeer error and two Johnnie kills would bring the Red Storm up 7-4. Trailing St. John's, two Tilden kills and an error tied the set 10 all. The teams would go back and forth through 14 points before St. John's claimed the victory with a Musketeer error and a kill to win the fifth and final set 16-14. Â

Tilden and Moriarty each tallied career best single match kills with 20 and 21 respectively. The pair hit over .300 with Moriarty hitting .315 and Tilden marking .340. Â

Hatkevich hit .500 in the match with seven kills on 12 attempts. The senior also had 49 assists, two blocks, and eight digs. Â

Niesen led the Musketeers in digs with 20 while Moriarty trailed the libero with 17. Niesen also had two aces in the match. Â

The Musketeers hit .224 overall with 65 team kills. Â

Xavier remains up north to face Seton Hall Saturday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. in South Orange, N.J. Â
