Xavier Sweeps Butler on the Road

INDIANAPOLIS – Xavier swept Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse Wednesday, Oct. 7.
The win puts the Musketeers 11-5 overall this season and 4-1 in BIG EAST matches.
Xavier took the first set 25-21 opening with a kill from Catherine Flaharty. Butler recorded four straight points to XU's one to begin the frame. The Musketeers responded and tied the set at 10 all before going on a five-point run. Four errors by the Bulldogs an ace from Kasey Quenichet and kills from Charlotte Moriarty and Margo Kemp put Xavier up 22-16. Butler would tally four more kills, but two errors by the Bulldogs would end the first set in the Musketeers' favor.
The Musketeers secured the second set 25-18 for the largest margin of victory of the evening. Xavier began the second frame with a five-nothing start including three kills and an ace from Moriarty. The Musketeers extended their lead 8-3 with three Butler errors. A kill from Flaharty brought the set to the media timeout and Ava Tilden would have a kill to follow paired with two Butler errors for an 18-9 lead. The Bulldogs managed to narrow the Musketeers' lead 23-18, but a block from Flaharty and Kemp and a kill from Kemp ended the set.
In the final frame, Xavier defeated Butler 25-19. XU started 6-3 with five kills with Flaharty claiming three. Two kills from Macy Hatkevich and two Bulldog errors would extend the Musketeers' lead 12-6. Jamison Gordon recorded an ace to make the set 17-9. Kills from Hatkevich and Kemp and another ace from Quenichet put the Musketeers up 21-11. The Bulldogs tried for the comeback, but a kill from Moriarty brought match point and Flaharty sealed the deal with her 12th kill of the night.

Flaharty had a match high 12 kills for a new career high. She hit .417 and had three block assists with one dig in the match. The redshirt sophomore now has 91 kills so far this season.

Moriarty had 11 kills with a .250 clip. She also had three assists, an ace and six digs. Moriarty tallied her 200th kill in the victory and totals 206 kills so far this season.

Gabby Semona hit .471 on nine kills from 17 attempts. She also had two block assists over Butler.

Quenichet and Gordon each tabbed two aces each.

The Musketeers averaged .340 for a new team season best hitting percentage.

In conference matches, Xavier is outhitting their opponents .283 to .222.

Xavier volleyball travels to Omaha, Neb. to face Creighton Sunday, Oct. 11. The match is set for 2 p.m. EST.
