Musketeers return to Hayden Field to host Ohio State on Wednesday
CINCINNATIÂ - Xavier baseball fell in the series finale with Evansville, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Hayden Field. The Purple Aces took the series, 2-1, with the win.
The Musketeers moved to 6-15 on the year, while the Purple Aces moved to 5-13.
Evansville got on the board in the first inning with a pair of runs, and added two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Mitchell Morton led off the frame with a single, and after JD Crisp reached on a fielders choice, a walk from Jorge Valdes and a single from Clay Burdette loaded the bases with one out. Josh Stonehouse brought Crisp in from third with a sac fly to get the Musketeers on the board.
Ashton Chronister made the start on the mound for the Musketeers, going a career-long 7.0 innings, not allowing a run after the third, and finishing with a career-best six strikeouts before exiting for the eighth. The 4-1 advantage for Evansville held into the eighth when the Purple Aces picked up another run to set the final score at 5-1.
The Musketeers remain at home to host Ohio State on Wednesday, March 18, set for a 3:00 p.m. start at Hayden Field. The game with the Buckeyes will be streamed live on XAVIER+.
