Game two between Musketeers and Terriers set for Saturday at 2 PM

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball opened up the series with Wofford with an 8-1 win at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon.

The Musketeers improved to 7-16 on the year, while the Terriers moved to 14-9.

Xavier got on the board with a two-run third, with JD Crisp leading off with a double and scoring after a single from Jorge Valdes and an error. Valdes moved to third on a ground ball from Clay Burdette and scored on a single from Jonathan Fitz to make it a 2-0 lead.

A six-run fourth made it an 8-0 Xavier lead, with walks from Donavan Canterberry and Carter Christenson leading off the inning, and a double from Landon Mensik bringing them both in. Crisp followed with a home run to left field to make it a 6-0 lead. Valdes got on with a single and scored on a triple from Burdette, and a ground ball from Fitz brought Burdette home to make it an eight-run advantage.

Ryan Piech made the start, going 5.0 scoreless innings, and the Xavier shutout held into the seventh when the Terriers got on the board, but Xavier's defense limited Wofford to just one run, setting the final score at 8-1.

The Musketeers continue the series with Wofford at Hayden Field on Saturday, March 21, with game two set for a 2:00 p.m. start on ESPN+.

AT THE PLATE

JD Crisp finished 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored after hitting his third home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth.
Landon Mensik went 1-4 with a double, driving in two RBIs and scoring a run.
Jonathan Fitz went 1-4 and drove in two RBIs.
Clay Burdette finished with a triple (1-4), drove in an RBI and scored a run.
Jorge Valdes went 3-5 at the plate, scoring a pair of runs.
Carter Christenson went 2-3 with a walk, scoring a run.
Donavan Canterberry got on with a hit (1-3) and a walk, scoring a run.

Ryan Piech made the start, pitching 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and three walks, striking out seven. Piech picked up the win, his third of the season.
Jake Hooker entered for the sixth, going 2.0 innings with one run scoring on three hits.
Michael Murphy came in from the bullpen for the eighth, striking out the side in the frame. He went the final 2.0 innings, not allowing a run and giving up just one hit. He finished with a pair of walks and a career-high three strikeouts.
