Musketeers' Pitching Staff Collects Season-High 16 Strikeouts in Win in Game One at Seton Hall

Game two with the Pirates set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Xavier's pitching staff collected a season-high 16 strikeouts, while the Musketeer offense matched its season high with 16 hits on the way to a 10-1 win in game one of three at Seton Hall on Friday evening.
The Musketeers improved to 17-22 (7-3 BIG EAST) on the season, while the Pirates dropped to 11-18 (0-7 BIG EAST).
The game was scoreless going into the third, when the Musketeers took a 1-0 lead after Carter Christenson led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a single from Donavan Canterberry and scored on a ground ball from Jorge Valdes.
Xavier added two more runs in the fourth with Josh Stonehouse getting hit by a pitch and Jonathan Fitz getting aboard with a single. A Luke Hammond single brought both in to make it a 3-0 lead. The Musketeers made it a 5-0 advantage in the sixth after getting a one-out single from Peter Johnson, who scored on a triple from Hammond, and a sac fly from Landon Mensik to bring in Hammond.
The Pirates picked up a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-1, but two more runs in the seventh extended the lead to six. Singles from Canterberry and Valdes put two on with no outs. Canterberry scored on a single from Stonehouse, who eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.Â
The 7-1 lead held into the ninth when three more runs came home for the Musketeers, with Clay Burdette getting on with a double, moving to third when Stonehouse reached on an error, and scoring on a single from Fitz. Hammond's second triple of the day brought in Jack DeTienne, pinch running for Fitz, and Stonehouse to set the final score at 10-1.
Ryan Piech made the start on the mound, limitng SHU to one run and collecting a career-high 12 strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work. Joey Arend and Jake Hooker combined for four strikeouts while limiting the Pirates to just two hits and two walks in the final 3.0 innings.

- Jake Hooker pitched the ninth, not allowing a run or a hit, walking two and striking out two.
