Series with Pirates wraps up at noon on Sunday
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Xavier secured its third series victory of BIG EAST play with a 6-3 win over Seton Hall in game two of three with the Pirates on Saturday afternoon.
The Musketeers improved to 18-22 (8-3 BIG EAST) on the season and leads the series 2-0, while the Pirates dropped to 11-19 (0-8 BIG EAST).
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the first and held the two-run advantage into the fifth when the Musketeers cut the lead in half. Carter Christenson got on with a walk, stole second and scored on a single from Jorge Valdes to cut the SHU lead to 2-1.
Xavier moved in front in the sixth with a three-run frame, with single from Jonathan Fitz and Peter Johnson leading off the inning. Fitz scored on a bunt from Luke Hammond and an SHU error. A double from Landon Mensik brought in Johnson and Hammond for the 4-2 lead.
Xavier added two more runs in the ninth, with Josh Stonehouse being hit by a pitch and Fitz getting on with a single to put two on with two out. After both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, Stonehouse scored on another wild pitch, and Fitz came home on a single from Hammond for the 6-2 lead.
The Pirates picked up a run in the bottom of the ninth to set the final score at 6-3.
The Musketeers and the Pirates wrap up the series on Sunday, set for a noon start on Pirate Sports Network.
