Musketeers Fall in Game One with St. John's

Game two with the Red Storm set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday
The Musketeers moved to 19-24 (9-4) on the season, while the Red Storm improved to 22-19 (8-2 BIG EAST)
St. John's took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, and the Musketeers responded with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Jorge Valdes led off with a single, stole second and scored on a double from Josh Stonehouse. After Stonehouse stole third, he came home on a single from Jonathan Fitz to tie it at 2-2.
The Red Storm retook the lead in the fifth on a solo home run, but the Musketeers tied it up again in the bottom of hte frame, with Stonehouse getting on with a single, moving to third on a double from Jonathan Fitz and scoring on a sac fly from Peter Johnson.
After SJU posted a three-run frame in the sixth, Xavier again responded to tie it at 6-6 in the bottom of the inning. Singles for Carter Christenson and Donavan Canterberry put two on with one out for Jorge Valdes. A single from Valdes brought in Christenson, and Clay Burdette hit an RBI single to bring in Canterberry. Another Stonehouse single brought in Valdes to pull the Musketeers even.
The Red Storm moved back in front in the seventh, posting six runs to take a 12-6 lead.
Xavier picked up a run in the eighth, with Stonehouse getting aboard on a hit-by-pitch, moving to third on a single from Fitz and scoring on a sac fly from Johnson to cut it to 12-7 but were unable to cut into the deficit any further.
Game two with the Red Storm is set for a 2:00 p.m. start on Saturday at Hayden Field, streamed live on XAVIER+.

- Josh Stonehouse went 3-of-4 with a double, driving in two RBIs and scoring three runs.
- Jorge Valdes matched his season high with four hits (4-6), driving in an RBI and scoring a run.
- Jonathan Fitz had a season-high four hits, going 4-of-5 with a double, bringing in an RBI.
- Peter Johnson (1-3, 1 BB) and Clay Burdette (1-6) also each finished with an RBI.
- Donavan Canterberry went 3-5 with a run scored. Carter Christenson (1-4) also scored a run.
- Luke Hammond (1-5) also recorded a hit, one of a season-high 18 for the Musketeers.
- Ryan Piech made the start, going 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits, striking out seven and walking one.
- Joey Arend entered with one on and two outs in the sixth, picking up the final out of the inning with a groundball. He finished with two runs allowed on two hits in 0.1 inning of work after facing two batters in the seventh.
- Karter Muck faced two batters in the seventh, allowing two runs.
- Owen Poole entered with the bases loaded and no one out in the seventh, allowing two run, one unearned on three hits, striking out one in 1.0 inning of work.
- Jack DeTienne came in for the eighth, going 2.0 scoreless innings with just one hit allowed, striking out one.
