Christenson, Murphy Lead Musketeers to Upset Win at No. 3 Georgia Tech

Xavier posted an 8-4 extra-inning win on Friday night
ATLANTA - Xavier defeated No. 3 Georgia Tech, 8-4, in 10 innings on Friday night at Mac Nease Baseball Park at Russ Chandler Stadium. The Xavier win snapped a 13-game home win streak for the Yellow Jackets (only the third home loss of the season for Georgia Tech who moves to 25-3 at home).
The win over No. 3 Georgia Tech is the highest ranked win since March 10, 2024 (Xavier defeated No. 2 LSU, 2-1, in Baton Rouge).
The Musketeers improved to 22-25 on the year, while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 37-8. Xavier has now won two straight games in 10 innings (defeated Miami, 10-7, in Oxford on April 28). The Musketeers move to 3-2 on the year in extra-inning games.
Clay Burdette gave the Musketeers an early lead in the first inning, hitting a solo home run to centerfield. Jonathan Fitz made the score 2-0 in the first when he crossed home plate from third base on a failed pickoff attempt by the Georgia Tech pitcher (attempting to pick off a Xavier runner at first base).
Tanner Thomas hit a solo home run to right field in the top of the second inning, giving the Musketeers a 3-0 advantage. The Yellow Jackets responded by scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame, closing within one run.
Georgia Tech tied the game at 3-3 on a Ryan Zuckerman home run in the fourth inning. The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the game, 4-3, on a Drew Burress RBI single to left field in the fifth inning.
Xavier tied the game, 4-4, in the ninth inning when JD Crisp crossed home plate on a Donavan Canterberry infield RBI fielder's choice.
Freshman Carter Christenson hit a two-out, three-RBI home run down the left field line in the 10th inning to give the Musketeers a 7-4 advantage. The home run was the first of Christenson's career.
Canterberry hit an RBI single up the middle to end the scoring in the 10th inning, giving the Musketeers a four-run lead.
Georgia Tech had two more hits (12-10) than Xavier and committed the lone error of the contest. Both teams left eight runners on base.
Game two of the weekend series is slated for 3 p.m. on Saturday. The game is being aired on the ACC Network Extra and The Varsity Network.

AT THE PLATE
- Jonathan Fitz went 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs. Tanner Thomas went 2-for-3 with two runs, two extra-base hits and a RBI. Thomas now has three home runs on the year.
- Clay Burdette hit his team-leading 16th home run of the season. The outfielder also has a team-leading 39 RBI and has reached base safely in 16 straight games.
- Carter Christenson finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
- JD Crisp, Peter Johnson and Tommy Townsend each added a hit. Donavan Canterberry finished with a hit and two RBI.
- Josh Stonehouse extended his reached base safely streak to a team-high 21 games.

- Garrett Helsel made his first start of the season (20th appearance of the season). The LHP threw three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work, while allowing two runs and two hits.
- Michael Murphy (3-0) went a season-high 6.1 innings of relief. The RHP threw a season-high six strikeouts. The Mason, Ohio, native limited the nation's No. 1 offense to only nine hits and two runs. Georgia Tech entered the game ranked No. 1 in total runs (467) and batting average (.356).
- Xavier limited the Yellow Jackets to four runs, only the seventh time Georgia Tech has be held to four or fewer runs in a game this season.
