Musketeers Drop Series Opener vs Creighton at Great American Ballpark

CINCINNATI - Xavier dropped its series opener vs Creighton on Thursday evening, 5-2, at Great American Ball Park.
The Musketeers moved to 25-28 (13-6 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays improved to 29-22 (13-6 BIG EAST).
Creighton took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out, RBI single to centerfield by Ben North. The Musketeers tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning on a Jorge Valdes one-out, RBI single to right centerfield.
The Bluejays regained the lead, 2-1, in the top of the seventh inning on a Nick Venteicher sacrifice fly to right field. Connor Capece scored on the play for Creighton. Xavier responded by tying the game in the bottom of the frame when Landon Mensik crossed home plate on a Donavan Canterberry infield ground out.
Teddy Deters gave Creighton a 4-2 advantage in the top of the ninth inning with a one-out, two-run homer to left field. Creighton added an insurance in the frame run when Nick Venteicher crossed home plate on a fielder error by the Musketeers.
The Musketeers had two more hits (9-7) than Creighton and left five more runners on base (11-6). Xavier committed the lone error of the game.
Game two of the weekend series vs the Bluejays is set for 2 p.m. on Friday from Hayden Field.

- Luke Hammond went 3-for-4 at the plate. The senior infielder now has 20 multi-hit games on the year, ranking tied for first on the team.
- Jorge Valde went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. The outfielder now has 14 multi-hit games and increased his season RBI total to 20.
- Tanner Thomas went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and run scored. The senior infielder now has seven multi-hit games and three doubles on the year.
- Tommy Townsend went 1-for-3 with a double. Clay Burdette went 1-for-3 and extended his current hit streak to seven games. He has also reached base safely in 22 straight games.
- Josh Stonehouse has now reached base safely in 27 straight games.

- Ryan Piech made his team-leading 13th start of the season, allowing two hits and one run in five innings of work. The RHP threw seven strikeouts and issued two walks. He has thrown seven or more strikeouts in a game nine times this season.
- Michael Murphy (3-1) pitched four innings in relief. The RHP allowed five hits and four runs (three earned). He threw three strikeouts and issued one walk.
- Murphy and Piech combined for 10 strikeouts, the 16th time the Musketeers have thrown 10 or more strikeouts in a game this season.
