06.05.26 | Women's Tennis
CINCINNATI – Doug Matthews has been named the Head Coach for Women's Tennis at the College of Charleston. Matthews was named Xavier Director of Tennis in 2022, remaining head coach of the women's program. He took over as the men's and women's tennis head coach prior to the 2015 season. Prior to the 2015 season, Matthews stepped in as interim head coach for the spring season before being named head coach.
"I'd like to thank Doug, who had a Xavier Hall of Fame career as a player and tremendous success as a coach leading our tennis programs," said Greg Christopher, Vice President for Institutional Strategy and Director of Athletics. "Doug led our women's tennis program to a sixth-straight BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championship in 2026, earning the program's sixth-straight, and seventh overall, NCAA appearance. Off the courts, the team consistently had one of the highest team GPAs in our department. We wish Doug and Kara luck and his family all the best in Charleston."
Matthews, who was inducted into the Xavier Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021, earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference team four consecutive years, being named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in 2006 and Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Performer in 2008 and 2009. He was a member of the Xavier men's tennis team from 2005-09, leading Xavier to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Conference championships in his junior and senior years and the first-ever men's tennis team appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2008 and 2009.
A national search for a new Head Coach for Women's Tennis is underway.
