Xavier Beats Akron 3-1 at Home

CINCINNATI – The Xavier Musketeers defeated the Akron Zips 3-1 at Cintas Center Sunday, Sept. 20.
The Musketeers are now 7-4 overall ahead of league action beginning Friday, Sept. 25.
Xavier started hot in the first frame going up 5-0 after two Zip errors, two aces and a kill from freshman Cami Sher. The Musketeers were up 18-14 over Akron after five consecutive kills with three from junior Charlotte Moriarty. Akron attempted to narrow the Musketeer's lead with two final kills, but it would not prove enough, and Xavier would win the set 25-19 on a kill from Magro Kemp.
Xavier and Akron shared the lead in the second set through six-all before the Musketeers tallied three straight points to go up 9-6. Akron would try for the come back at 15-13, but a kill from Kemp and an error would put XU up 17-13 and Akron would not come within four points again. Sher would end the set on a kill to win 25-16.
Akron took the third set 25-23 despite 14 Musketeer kills and two aces. XU led through 18-all before an Akron ace and kill to take the lead. The Musketeers would tie it back up at 22-22 and once again at 23-23, but a Zip kill and a Musketeer error would seal the set for Akron.
The Musketeers went up 9-3 in the fourth frame with two kills and two Zip errors. Akron would get within a point (11-10) of the Musketeers before Xavier went up 18-12 on five errors, a kill and an ace. The Zips would not get within four points of the Musketeers again, and Kelsey Niesen had an ace to end the match 25-18.

Sher made her first collegiate start and had a career-high eight kills while hitting .174 in the match.

Moriarty led the match in kills with 14 while also recording two assists, four aces and 14 digs. The junior's four aces mark a career best.

Kemp had 11 kills and hit .357 against the Zips. She had a season best seven blocks and 16 points.

Niesen had 20 digs Sunday afternoon and has 190 total this season. Her match-winning ace marked her 10th of the season.

Xavier held Akron to just a .054 hitting percentage in the fourth set and .135 for the match.

Xavier begins league play Friday, Sept. 25, when they host Georgetown for their first BIG EAST match of the season. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Cintas Center.
