Ed Tolentino was hired as an assistant coach in the summer of 2016. He was promoted to associate head coach in August of 2017.
Tolentino helped coach the squad to another record season in 2023 where the Musketeers collected a 18-12 record, a fourth place BIG EAST regular season finish and a second consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament. During the 2023 season, for the first time in program history, Xavier volleyball defeated Creighton, after 24 previous attempts that spanned 45 seasons. Ranked #11 in the country at this point, the victory over the Bluejays was the highest ranked win in program history and the first ranked win since 2007.
From 2019-2023, he mentored four-time All-BIG EAST selection Carrigan O'Reilly. The setter concluded her career in 2023 with three Preaseason All-BIG EAST selections, four All-BIG EAST selections, 17 BIG EAST Honor Roll selections, an AVCA All-Region selection, and two BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week selections. She became the second Musketeer to join the 4000 assists-1000 digs club and she totaled six career triple-doubles and 47 career double-doubles. In 2021 (spring), O'Reilly averaged a career-high 10.71 assists per set, which ranked her second in the BIG EAST and 28th in the NCAA. In the Xavier volleyball record book, she finished fifth in career assists (4,337), third in career sets (512), and third in career matches (134).
In 2022, Tolentino was the recipient of the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award and helped the Musketeers to a 21-12 record, a third place BIG EAST regular season finish, a third place BIG EAST Tournament finish, and a trip to the NIVC Quarterfinals.
In nine years on the bench, he has helped coach eight players to All-BIG EAST honors, including first-team selections - Abbey Bessler, Sophia Peterson, Carrigan O'Reilly, Brooklyn Cink, and Delaney Hogan. Bessler and Peterson also earned AVCA All-Region First Team honors, while Bessler was also named an AVCA All-American.
In 2016, Tolentino helped the Musketeers post a 20-13 overall record. Xavier placed second in the BIG EAST standings with a 13-5 mark and advanced to the conference tournament championships match.
Tolentino joined Xavier following a one-year stint at the University of Connecticut. The Huskies went 16-15 (10-10 AAC) in 2015 and had two players earn all-conference honors.
Prior to UCONN, Tolentino was on the coaching staff at Morehead State for two seasons. He helped the Eagles win their fourth straight Ohio Valley Conference title and make their second NCAA tournament appearance in 2013. The following season Tolentino was promoted to associate head coach.
From 2009-12, Tolentino was an assistant coach at Georgia Tech – helping the Yellow Jackets record 72 wins and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2009. He assisted in coaching three players to AVCA All-America honors.
All told, Tolentino has assistant coaching stints at Georgia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Madonna (Mich.). At Madonna, he helped guide the Crusaders to three straight conference championships and three national tournaments. He was also the head coach at Oakland University for three seasons (1999-2001).
Tolentino has also coached at the club level, where he was the master trainer for Premier Volleyball Academy in Maumee, Ohio and the M-Juniors in Ann Arbor, Mich.
He is currently a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and has presented several topics at the AVCA Convention. Tolentino had also been a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and had served as a minor league trainer for the Detroit Tigers Organization before dedicating his time to coaching volleyball.
