"Brett was our number one infield prospect for the recruiting class. He is an outstanding fielder and someday will be a hitter in the middle of our lineup," said Xavier Head Coach John Morrey. Smith was named Cincinnati Enquirer Small Schools Player of the Year this past year after leading his team in all offensive, defensive and pitching categories. He earned the All-City Batting Title after posting a .588 batting average, 9 home runs and 40 RBIs. In addition, Smith was named MVP of his team and First Team All-Conference.
Smith?s numbers on the mound are equally impressive. In 2000, he posted a 6-1 record with a 0.67 ERA. He struck out 64 batters in 42 innings pitched, both team highs. He also recorded three saves. The shortstop/pitcher led his team to a 20-6 record and a district championship.
"Brett has great speed, but he has great power also. That is a very rare combination for a shortstop. Nobody works harder at baseball than Brett does," said Smith?s current head coach Tim Dunn.
Smith will start classes at Xavier in the Fall of 2001.
