Baseball Takes Extra-Innings Win in Series Opener at Georgetown

Musketeers and Hoyas return to the field on Friday at 3 PM for game two
TYSONS, Va. - After tying the game in the ninth inning to force extra innings, Xavier baseball took the 5-1 win over Georgetown in 12 innings in the series opener with the Hoyas at Capital One Park.
The Musketeers improved to 11-20 (2-2 BIG EAST) on the year, while the Hoyas moved to 16-14 (0-1 BIG EAST).
The Hoyas took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a solo home run, with Georgetown starter Spencer Seid taking a perfect game into the ninth inning, collecting 10 strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work.Â
With one out in the ninth, Carter Christenson got aboard with a single, the first base runner of the day for the Musketeers. Jason Jelic, pinch hitting, drove him in with an RBI double to tie the game at 1-1 and send the Hoyas to the bullpen. The tie held through the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
After scoreless 10th and 11th frames, the Musketeers broke through for four runs in the 12th. Jonathan Fitz led off the inning with a walk, with Alex Junghans pinch running for him. Josh Stonehouse was hit by a pitch and Tommy Townsend reached on an error to load the bases with no outs in the inning. Luke Hammond brought in Junghans with a sac fly to give Xavier its first lead at 2-1. A single from Donavan Canterberry brought in Stonehouse to make it a 3-1 advantage.
Still in the top of the 12th, Joey Arend was hit by a pitch to reloaded the bases with two outs. Jorge Valdes walked to bring in Townsend, and Clay Burdette reached on an error to bring in Canterberry to give Xavier the 5-1 lead.
Xavier's pitching staff collected 10 strikeouts, and limited Georgetown to six hits, holding the Hoyas off the board after the fourth inning to take the win.
Game two of three with the Hoyas is set for a 3:00 p.m. start on Friday, April 3, streamed live on MuscoVision.

- Jake Hooker came in for the eight inning, going 1.1 innings without allowing a run, giving up just one hit and striking out one.
- Garrett Helsel came in with one out in the ninth, going 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out a pair. Helsel picked up the win, his first of the season.
- Xavier's pitching staff collected 10 Ks, marking the 10th game this season the Musketeers have 10 or more strikeouts.
