09.17.01 | Men's Soccer
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the game, but the Musketeers answered less then 15 minutes later to tie the match. A pair of goals within seven minutes midway through the second half gave Xavier its first win of the season.
Xavier (1-4) got is first goal from freshman Tiest Sondaal (Tilburg, The Netherlands) at 34:22 into the match. Sondaal?s score leveled the game at 1-all after Nathan Fleetwood put UK (2-2-1) on the board 20 minutes into the match.
Seventy-one minutes into the match, Xavier senior Logan Wallace (Loveland, Ohio/Moeller) scored the game winner after his shot was deflected by UK goalkeeper Brad Samelko. Alex Schick (Bowling Green, Ky./Greenwood) scored an insurance goal for Xavier with 12 minutes left to play. Sondaal assisted Schick?s goal.
Monday?s game was added to XU?s schedule over the weekend. Xavier was to play in the UK/Traditional Bank Soccer Classic this past weekend, but the event was postponed by the Southeastern Conference, of which Kentucky is a member, after last weeks terrorist attacks. The Musketeers were to play Winthrop and The Citadel in the Classic.
Xavier will play at Cincinnati on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The next home match for the Musketeers is Sunday at 3 p.m. against Valparaiso. That game is part of a doubleheader with the women?s team. They will play Illinois State at 1 p.m.
