The Xavier swim teams open their 2003-04 schedule at the IUPUI Invitational his weekend and are looking to use a experienced roster comprised of 12 seniors and eight juniors to become one of the key competitors in the Atlantic 10 Conference Meet come February.
Seventh year Head Coach George Rathman feels that this year's teams has the ability to improve on last year's results at the Conference Championship Meet. Last February, the Musketeer men placed fifth while the women were eighth.
One of the keys to this season for the men will be the performance of senior John Janszen. A six-time finalist at A-10s last season, John Janszen was part of the school record breaking 400 Medley and 800 Free Relays. He also performed well in the backstroke with a fifth place finish in the 200 Back and a seventh place effort in the 100 Back. 5th in the 400 IM
The Musketeers will also be looking toward junior Matt Young who was also part of the 400 Medley and 800 Free Relays along with John Janszen. Young also had a record breaking performance in the 200 Medley Relay as well as sixth place finishes in the 200 and 400 IM and a seventh place effort in the 200 Back.
David Janszen, younger brother of senior John, is among the leaders of a strong sophomore class as he was a seven-time finalist at the Atlantic 10 Championship Meet last season. While also a member of the aforementioned 200 and 400 Medley Relays, David Janszen helped the 200 and 400 Free Relays to sixth place finishes. He also set a school record in the 100 Fly to place sixth and finished fourth in the 200 Back and fifth in the 100 Back, another school record.
Fellow sophomore Kyle Hawley set a new school record of his own in the 200 Fly last season to place seventh at the Conference meet. He also swam to a 10th place finish in the 500 Free in record time and was part of the 400 Medley Relay, which was fifth with a new school record. Hawley rounded out a successful A-10 Championship last season with a seventh place finish in the 200 Free. also part of the 400 and 800 free relays
Senior Angie Hinrichs leads an eight woman senior class for XU entering the 2003-04 season. Hinrichs, the 2001-02 Atlantic 10 100 Free Champion holds four individual school records while also part of four school record relay teams.
Hinrichs is joined by classmate Molly Moeller who last season broke her own school record to place fourth in the 100 Back at the Conference Championships. She was also sixth in the 200 Back in record time and was part of the 400 Medley Relay team that shattered the school record at A-10s to place sixth.
Fellow senior Danielle Miller had a pair of fifth place finishes at the Atlantic 10 Championships in breaststroke events. She was fifth in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and completed the 200 in school record time.
Juniors Sarah Blush, Becky Faust and Janet Heil are also looking for another successful season in 2003-04. Blush was also part of the 400 Medley Relay last year while leading the 200 Medley Relay to a seventh place finish and setting a new school record in the 100 Breaststroke to place ninth. Faust broke the school record while placing eighth in the 400 IM at A-10s. She also set a personal best in the 200 IM to place 10th. Heil set a new school record in the 200 Fly to finish third and used a new personal best in the 400 IM to place 10th. She was also on the 400 Medley Relay as well as a record breaking 800 Free Relay team
Xavier should also see plenty of support from a talented group of newcomers on both sides. New additions on the men's and women's squads are expected to contribute throughout the season.
"From a recruiting standpoint, We are moving in the right direction to not only remain competitive in the conference, but to steadily improve our standing," Assistant Coach Chris Gage commented. "We have a broader reach than ever before in our recruiting and this year's class should be the beginning of exciting things to come at Xavier."
The Musketeers will face another challenging schedule this season with eight home dates including a stretch of six straight home meets after the opener at IUPUI. Xavier will host the same Jaguars of IUPUI on Thursday, October 16 at 6:00 PM followed by meets with Boston College on Friday at 3 p.m. and Eastern Illinois on Saturday at noon.
