Musketeers Claim Home Victory Over Morehead State

CINCINNATI - In the second home contest of the season, Xavier was victorious over Morehead State in three games, 30-28, 30-17 and 30-22. Senior Kate Duchek was the only Musketeer with double digit kills and ended the match with 13, while XU controlled the net with 14 total blocks compared to only three by the Eagles. The Musketeers stand at 12-5 on the season, while MSU drops to 5-14.
The Musketeers trailed 2-0 in the first game before senior Laci Hasenour served up seven straight points and gave Xavier the 8-2 advantage. MSU would rally back cutting the Xavier advantage to just 12-10 before another XU run pushed the lead back to 16-10 in favor of the home team. The Eagles would not go away and pulled back within 27-25 before the Musketeers went point for point with Morehead State to end the game. Astyn Bjorklund paced Xavier in the game with three kills and Jill Quayle added two kills and four block assists.
The second game found XU down 3-0 early but an 18-4 flurry by Xavier put the lead at 11 for the blue and white and marked the largest margin the Musketeers would hold until the last two points of the game. Duchek tallied six kills and a .600 hitting percentage in the game with Quayle notching three more kills. Freshman Jenn Welsh dished out 11 assists and had six digs.
The final game provided many substitutions for the Musketeers with 15 players seeing the court. After falling behind 1-0, Duchek answered by serving seven straight points to put XU ahead 8-1 early. During the 8-0 Xavier run, sophomore Lauren Kowal posted two kills and three block assists to help the Musketeers grab the lead for good. Hasenour had four kills and three block assists, while Duchek ended with five kills and three digs.
Duchek paced the Musketeers with 13 kills and a .367 hitting percentage, five digs, one solo block and one block assists. Quayle finished with six kills and a match-high seven block assists. Hasenour made her first start of the season and had an immediate impact as the senior ended with five kills, two aces, four digs, one solo block and four block assists. Three Musketeers posted double digit digs as Welsh notched 11 and Carley Horvath and Jordan Brightwell each tallying 10.
Xavier, now 2-0 at home, will return to the court on Friday night as A-10 foe, Dayton, visits Cintas Center for a 7:00 pm match. As always, follow all of the action on Gametracker at www.GOXAVIER.com.
