CINCINNATI - Head coach George Rathman has announced that former Musketeer John Janszen will return to become an assistant coach on the XU swimming staff. Janszen, a 2004 Xavier graduate, will assist mainly with the distance and sprint groups, while being an integral part of the recruiting process.
"As a former student-athlete at Xavier, John understands the mission of the university and the role that athletics plays in a student's life," stated head coach George Rathman. "John had a very successful career at Xavier and we are looking forward to having him start his collegiate coaching career with his alma mater. John will assist with the distance and sprint groups as well as the recruiting. This past year John gained additional experience at the club and high school level, which will enable him to move right into this position. He was an instrumental part in our improvement within the Atlantic 10 Conference during his time here and I look forward to his contributions as a coach as we continue our advancement within the conference."
Janszen comes to Xavier after serving as the head swim coach for the Gamble-Nippert YMCA. His duties there included preparing year-round swimming and strength programs for all age groups, while planning and scheduling team trips throughout the season.
Prior to his stint at the Gamble-Nippert YMCA, Janszen was the head swim coach at Wyoming High School. While at WHS, he led the women's team to the 2005 Cincinnati Hills League championship and second place finishes at the sectional and district meets. For his efforts, he was named the CHL Women's Coach of the Year.
While a student-athlete at Xavier, Janszen was named the 2000 and 2001 MVP of the men's swim team. He was also named the Most Improved Student-Athlete in the 2003-04 season. He earned the Scholar Athlete Award for four semesters and was named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2001. Janszen was a five-time finalist at the A-10 Championships and still is part of the school-record breaking 400 Medley relay team.
