As part of the new and improved athletics website at GOXAVIER.com, the Student Athlete of the Week Driven by Toyota will profile a different XU student-athlete each week. This feature will allow all Xavier supporters to learn a little more about the outstanding student athletes that attend Xavier University.
Krystel Kooyman, a junior on the women's swimming team, is this week's Student-Athlete of the week. Kooyman, a Louisville, Ky. native, came to Xavier after a standout prep career at Ballard High School and specializes in the breaststroke and individual medley. As a sophomore, Kooyman finished second in the 200 breaststroke at the 2004 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. Kooyman is the school record holder in three individual events: 100 breaststroke (1:05.52), 200 breast (2:20.90) and the 200 IM (2:08.48).
The junior earned A-10 Performer of the Week honors on Dec. 5 after she won the 200 breast for the third straight year at the SummaCare Invitational with a time of 2:21.52. Kooyman finished second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.11, while earning ninth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.67. She also helped the women's relay teams to seventh and two eighth place finishes. The 400 medley relay team notched seventh place with a time of 3:58.39, while the 200 and 400 free relays earned eighth places with times of 1:39.80 and 3:36.17, respectively.
The Xavier swim teams will return to the pool on Saturday, Jan. 14, when the Musketeers travel to Cleveland to take on Cleveland State and Duquesne.
